Lower Sorbian to Swahili: agreement belongs to different parts of the sentence

A descriptive ending follows the target noun’s class

The University of Georgia’s KIKO materials contrast kisu kizuri with visu vizuri for a good knife and good knives. They also give mti mzuri and miti mizuri for a good tree and good trees. The describing word changes with the selected noun’s class and number. A Lower Sorbian adjective ending cannot choose the Swahili prefix merely because it identifies a source gender or quantity.

The target noun has to be selected before that agreement can be evaluated. A Lower Sorbian description of two knives still needs the real quantity preserved, but copying a source dual form does not create the appropriate Swahili noun-class construction. Likewise, a change in the adjective prefix across two target nouns is not necessarily a change from male to female reference. The KIKO examples concern different classes of objects, not biological sex.

A verbal object marker can refer to an already named participant

Seidl and Dimitriadis’s primary corpus study describes Swahili object markers inside the verb. Its analyzed sequence Ni-li-ku-on-a expresses the speaker seeing the addressee: subject, past and object information occur in one verb structure. The paper also documents examples where a lexical object is present alongside object marking. A Lower Sorbian name accompanied by a Swahili verbal marker does not therefore automatically introduce another person.

The authors investigate discourse-related variation rather than present one rule that predicts every object marker from a noun’s lexical class. Their evidence is a written corpus, and they discuss variable speaker judgments. Use that scope when assessing a translation: a named object and an object marker can work together, but the marker’s appearance or absence should not be judged through a universal rule copied from an introductory paradigm. The source participant relationship remains the first thing to establish.

Source animacy affects case without supplying a target prefix

Stone illustrates Lower Sorbian mam dweju konjowu for having two horses and explains the animate dual object’s genitive-shaped morphology. That source ending does not specify a Swahili object-marker slot. The languages can both distinguish animate reference while placing the relevant information in different grammatical structures.

For a Lower Sorbian account involving a person seeing an animal, keep the observer and observed participant separate. Swahili subject and object material within a verb can identify opposite ends of that relationship; changing one marker is not comparable to changing an adjective’s class agreement. The KIKO noun phrase and the corpus paper’s verb structure therefore answer different questions.

This distinction helps when the source describes an animal with a property and then reports somebody’s action toward it. The descriptive phrase must agree internally with the chosen Swahili noun, while the verb must retain who acts on whom. A correct-looking noun-class prefix in one location cannot establish that every participant relationship elsewhere in the sentence is correct.
