Lower Sorbian to German: ten need not mean this

The colloquial article is not automatically a pointing word

Pankau argues that colloquial Lower Sorbian ten and its related forms function as definite articles in the variety he studies. He contrasts them with demonstratives built with toś or tam. This distinction should not be erased by assigning every short source determiner the German meaning dieser.

The study’s bucket example distinguishes identifying one bucket among alternatives from a definite reference whose intended item is already established. For an original Lower Sorbian request about an object on a workbench, determine whether the speaker points out this particular object or refers back to the object already under discussion.

German likewise distinguishes definite articles from demonstrative articles. IDS grammis explains der, die and das as determiners and lists dieser and jener among demonstrative forms. A translation can therefore retain the source distinction rather than make every familiar object into an emphatically selected one.

Agreement does not make the source determiner a new lexical item

Pankau lists ten, ta and to for singular gender distinctions, alongside tej for dual and te for plural in his article analysis. These source differences should not be translated as unrelated pointing expressions simply because their spelling changes. They belong to a grammatical paradigm within the described variety.

The German article also inflects for gender, number and case, but its form depends on the German noun phrase. A Lower Sorbian masculine head cannot select German der mechanically if the chosen German noun has another gender or if the target phrase requires another case.

For an original source passage first naming a building and then referring to its entrance, identify the referent of each determiner separately. A target article change can follow the new German noun or its case without changing from that building to another. Conversely, retaining the same-looking article is not proof that the target still refers to the same thing.

German stress can complicate a written comparison

IDS notes that a stressed definite article can have demonstrative function. The target distinction is therefore not always reducible to checking whether dieser appears. A German translation intended for speech can express a contrast through stress, while an ordinary written article may offer less visible evidence of that contrast.

For an original colloquial Lower Sorbian correction selecting one of two similar objects, preserve the selection in the German wording clearly enough for the intended medium. A neutral article that merely signals familiarity may not convey the corrective pointing intended by the source demonstrative. The context of the request determines whether that difference matters.

This guide concerns the colloquial evidence analyzed by Pankau, not an assumption that every written Lower Sorbian ten has identical distribution. Read the source expression’s referential job, then the target noun’s gender, number and case, and finally whether the German phrasing conveys familiarity or contrastive selection. The languages offer comparable distinctions, but a fixed word-for-word determiner mapping would ignore how each phrase identifies its referent.
