Lower Sorbian to Nepali: keeping two people distinct from a plural form
Start with the people, not the ending
A Lower Sorbian message can distinguish two participants through its grammar. Nepali can describe the same participants, but the translator should not expect an equivalent dual pronoun to carry every distinction. For an arrival message, an invitation or a classroom introduction, establish exactly who belongs to the group before deciding whether the result preserves the source.
Stone’s Lower Sorbian pronoun table separates dual mej from plural my, and dual wej from plural wy. His discussion also notes respectful use of wy for one or two addressees. A source form resembling an ordinary plural therefore needs interpretation alongside the relationship between the speakers. Counting visible pronouns without their social context can produce the wrong headcount.
If a host expects two visitors, that detail affects the welcome, seating and introduction. Preserve the pair where the source establishes it. If a respectful address concerns one guest, do not turn the guest into a group merely because the Lower Sorbian address uses a plural form. These are different reasons for choosing a source expression.
Nepali marks respect separately from the size of the group
The Introduction to the Nepali Language textbook distinguishes polite तपाईं, tapāī̃, from its plural तपाईंहरू, tapāī̃harū. Its first-person pair is म, ma, and हामी, hāmī. These teaching paradigms show why a plural first-person target cannot by itself reproduce the source distinction between a pair and a larger group.
For an exchange between a receptionist and two visitors, first identify who is speaking and who is being addressed. The visitors describing themselves and the receptionist addressing them require different persons, even though the same two people are involved. Keep any source detail establishing two participants visible rather than expecting a general plural to establish that number.
The textbook also gives respectful उहाँ, uhā̃, for a third person, with उहाँहरू, uhā̃harū, for respectful plural reference. Respectful reference does not itself identify someone as male or female. When a source introduces a guest and then refers back respectfully, follow that person through the exchange instead of inventing a change of participant.
A noun without the plural suffix may still describe several things
The same lesson presents हरू as a common plural marker but explains that other sentence elements can already establish plurality. Its example यी किताब हुन्। means that these are books, although the noun does not carry that suffix. Judge the whole expression before deciding that a translation has accidentally reduced several items to one.
This matters if the two visitors also bring several documents. The visitors’ headcount and the documents’ quantity are separate pieces of information. A plural reference to the documents cannot establish how many visitors brought them, just as identifying two visitors does not specify how many papers each carries.
Check the finished introduction by assigning every personal reference to an actual participant, then check the belongings separately. Where exact quantity matters, retain the source’s explicit information. Where Nepali expresses plurality elsewhere in the sentence, a missing noun suffix alone is insufficient evidence of a mistake. The aim is a readable exchange with the same participants and quantities, rather than matching every Lower Sorbian ending to a visible Nepali ending.
