Lower Sorbian to Luxembourgish: the owner is not always the recipient

Dative material can identify an owner inside a larger phrase

A Lower Sorbian message can distinguish a parent from that parent’s child before saying who receives a book. In Luxembourgish, an ownership construction may contain dative material even when the owner is not receiving anything. Read the complete phrase before assigning the transfer.

INLL’s Luxembourgish lesson describes a third-person possessive construction with a dative possessor followed by the possessed person or thing and a possessive article. Its examples include a man’s son in subject, direct-object and indirect-object positions. The owner remains inside the phrase while the son’s grammatical role changes.

For a Lower Sorbian gift arrangement, this distinction matters immediately. Giving a book to the man’s son is not the same as giving it to the man. A target sentence can mention both people, so recognizing the owner’s dative form alone will not establish who should collect the gift.

Follow the whole possessed expression through the sentence

The lesson illustrates “dem Mann säi Jong” with the son as a subject or direct object, and “dem Mann sengem Jong” with the son as an indirect object. Those changes belong to the complete possessive phrase. They do not introduce another son or transfer ownership to a new man.

Stone’s Lower Sorbian account also distinguishes how owners can be expressed, including a restriction on possessive adjectives with attributive modifiers. The translation needs the relationship that the source establishes, rather than a mechanical replacement of a Lower Sorbian suffix with one Luxembourgish word.

Suppose a message first says that a child will arrive and then asks someone to hand the child a parcel. The child remains the same person, but the role changes between the two clauses. A target form can change accordingly without altering the family relationship.

Keep the person performing the handover separate as well. The owner embedded in a possessive phrase does not automatically become the courier. A sentence can involve a writer giving instructions, a courier carrying a parcel, and the child who receives it.

A first name after dem does not establish a male person

INLL specifically notes dem with a person’s first name in this possessive construction, including female names. A Lower Sorbian reader should therefore not infer a male owner simply from that target element. The named person and the intended relationship supply the reference.

This helps when translating messages that name several family members. Preserve the source’s identities instead of changing a person because an article resembles a masculine pattern learned elsewhere. A grammatical form in one construction need not function as a general label for a person’s sex.

The lesson also points out the Luxembourgish n-rule in possessive articles. A final n may appear or disappear according to the following sound. That spelling variation should not be read as a change from one owner to several owners.

Review the arrangement as a chain of responsibilities: whose relative is mentioned, what that relative does, and whether someone receives an item. Then read the target possessive phrase as a unit. This preserves the Lower Sorbian participants while allowing Luxembourgish to mark ownership and sentence role in separate parts of the same construction.
