Lower Sorbian to Kyrgyz: a family relationship inside an ownership phrase

The owner can be described rather than simply named

A Lower Sorbian message about a family house can contain more than one relationship inside the noun phrase. Our father’s house identifies a house through a father, while also identifying whose father is meant. A Kyrgyz translation must preserve both relationships instead of making our modify the house directly.

Stone’s Lower Sorbian discussion illustrates našogo nana dom for our or my father’s house in the described usage. He distinguishes this construction from a related Upper Sorbian possessive-adjective pattern. The two languages must not be treated as interchangeable sources simply because the handbook describes them together.

For a family visit, our house and our father’s house may refer to different buildings. A target sentence that keeps the house and the first-person relationship but drops the father could send the visitor to the wrong address. The ownership chain is practical information, not ornamental grammar.

A target genitive phrase identifies a relationship, not an action

The Kyrgyz UD case reference illustrates “Алинин китеби”, Ali’s book, under genitive case. This provides a documented target ownership phrase. Ali is associated with the book as possessor; the phrase alone does not say that he wrote it, bought it or currently carries it.

In a Lower Sorbian request to return somebody’s book, distinguish the owner from the person performing the return. The target must not make the owner the actor merely because that person’s name appears next to the object. Another person can return Ali’s book without becoming its owner.

Likewise, preserve a source distinction between an owner and a recipient. Returning an item to a neighbour is not proof that the item belongs to that neighbour. The neighbour could be collecting it on behalf of somebody else. Translate the stated relationships rather than fill gaps with the most convenient ownership story.

A longer possessive phrase can contain several people, but it still identifies one object in the larger event. Find that head object before deciding who performs the sentence’s action. A familiar name inside its description does not automatically become the subject.

Do not replace Lower Sorbian with an Upper Sorbian shortcut

Stone specifically notes a constraint on Lower Sorbian possessive adjectives when the underlying owner noun has an attributive modifier. His Lower Sorbian example uses an adnominal genitive phrase instead of the Upper Sorbian pattern discussed beside it. This is a reason to inspect the language label of a reference example.

For translation into Kyrgyz, the purpose of that source analysis is to recover the owner phrase correctly. It does not require the target to reproduce a Lower Sorbian adjective suffix or to copy the exact source word count. Different grammatical packaging can preserve the same family relationship.

Keep ordinary ownership separate from stylistic emphasis as well. If a source merely identifies the building for a visit, do not add an insistence that it exclusively belongs to the family. If ownership is disputed, however, that contrast must remain visible.

Read the result by tracing the chain from the head object outward: which house or book, associated with whom, and how that person is identified. Then check the action around it. This preserves the Lower Sorbian message without collapsing a relative, an owner, a recipient and an actor into the same participant.
