Lower Sorbian to Ganda: a pair of people and actions involving one another

A source dual can become a counted Ganda plural

Lower Sorbian actively distinguishes a dual, according to the Sorbian Institute. The FSI Luganda course gives abantu babiri for two people and omuntu omu for one person. The target expresses the count through a noun and agreeing numeral rather than a Lower Sorbian dual ending. A change in the number of separate written forms does not change the actual number of people.

For a source arranging work for two people, retain that exact count instead of treating an unspecified Ganda plural as automatically sufficient. At the same time, do not confuse the class prefixes with Lower Sorbian masculine or feminine categories. The selected Ganda noun determines its own agreement pattern. Source number and target concord need to cooperate, but their visible endings are not interchangeable.

A demonstrative and verb can change with the people referred to

The FSI course contrasts a singular reference with Abantu bano babeera mu kibuga, describing these people living in a town. The plural noun, demonstrative and verb form belong to the same reference chain. A Lower Sorbian message can likewise identify a group and then say where it lives, but a target correction must consider the complete Ganda construction rather than replace one isolated prefix.

This helps distinguish a missing participant from a legitimate agreement change. If the source refers to the two people already mentioned, the target should retain that group and its location. Changing only the noun while leaving incompatible demonstrative or verbal reference can make the phrase incoherent even when the numeral remains correct.

Two people acting does not establish whether they act on themselves

Stone describes Lower Sorbian reflexive and reciprocal resources, including myś se for washing oneself and jaden drugi for one another. A dual subject can occur with different relationships between those participants. Each person acting on themselves and each acting on the other are distinct events; the fact that there are exactly two people does not choose between them.

McPherson and Paster’s primary Luganda study documents reciprocal -agan- and a reflexive e- prefix. Their consultants also supplied tweeliisa for feeding one another in a context where they rejected a particular proposed suffix combination. That evidence cautions against treating a morphological label as a universal translation recipe. The researchers report particular accepted constructions rather than license arbitrary combinations of all the endings in a chart.

For a Lower Sorbian description of two people helping or serving one another, preserve that mutual relationship before assessing the target morphology. For a source describing each person attending to themselves, do not introduce mutual action solely because a Ganda reciprocal-looking option is available. Count, reference and direction of action remain separate questions. Reading all three keeps the source pair intact while allowing the target verb construction to express the documented relationship.
