Latvian to English: identify the experiencer and restore English articles

Man is often the person experiencing or possessing something

Latvian can express possession and preference through a dative pronoun. “Man ir biļete” is “I have a ticket.” The English sentence makes the owner its subject instead of trying to reproduce an arrangement like to me is a ticket. Translate the relationship as a unit, then build an ordinary English clause.

“Man patīk šī grāmata” is “I like this book.” Here the person represented by man experiences the liking, while the book is the grammatical subject in Latvian. Misreading that arrangement can reverse who likes what. In reviews and short personal messages, identify the experiencer before selecting an English pronoun and verb.

Gendered agreement is not always a reason to label gender

Latvian adjectives and participles can show gender where the corresponding English form does not. “Esmu gatava” can simply be “I am ready.” The feminine form does not require “I am a ready woman” or another explanation in ordinary English. Preserve gender information where it identifies someone or matters to the message, but do not force every grammatical ending into a new English description.

If a paragraph mentions several people, Latvian agreement may help identify which person a later phrase describes. Use that clue to preserve reference in English. Removing every gender distinction too early can make an English pronoun ambiguous even though the Latvian sentence was clear. Repeat a name where necessary.

Choose a or the from the conversation

Latvian does not have an article system corresponding directly to English a and the. English nevertheless often requires an article for a singular countable noun. Decide whether an item is introduced for the first time, has already been mentioned, or is identifiable from the situation. A reservation message about an expected ticket may need the ticket rather than a ticket.

Demonstratives and the wider description can establish specificity, but do not mechanically convert every definite-looking form into the. A natural English noun phrase depends on the whole reference. Keep product names distinct from generic item descriptions so a reader knows what to search for or bring.

Location and address become English phrases

“Es esmu Rīgā” is “I am in Riga.” The Latvian locative ending carries the relationship expressed by English in. A different place construction can describe movement to Riga or departure from it; do not flatten them into one location statement. A travel update should retain the actual direction of movement.

Latvian tu and jūs usually become English you, but jūs may address one person politely or several people. Clarify a group explicitly if number affects an instruction. Preserve courtesy through a suitable request rather than adding titles mechanically. Finally, retain Latvian diacritics in personal and organization names even though the surrounding text is now English.
