English to Latvian: gender, possession, and polite address need decisions

An English description may hide the speaker’s gender

Latvian adjectives and some participles mark gender and number. English “I am ready” does not tell the translator which form describes the speaker. Latvian can use “Es esmu gatavs” for a male speaker or “Es esmu gatava” for a female speaker. Choosing one without knowing the intended speaker adds an assumption absent from English.

The same issue appears in accounts of completed actions involving participles. If the source is a reusable message intended for different speakers, do not silently publish one gendered version as universal. Obtain the needed information or use a faithful formulation whose grammar does not depend on an unsupported choice. Keep agreement consistent throughout the message.

Have and like require their own Latvian frames

“I have a ticket” is “Man ir biļete.” Latvian commonly expresses possession through a dative possessor and ir rather than by reproducing an English subject–have–object sequence. The person represented by man is the owner, not an object receiving an action. Understand that relationship before selecting pronoun forms.

Preferences also often use a dative experiencer: “I like music” is “Man patīk mūzika.” The thing liked supplies the grammatical subject. A literal arrangement based on English I like can reverse or disrupt the roles. In a recommendation, establish whether the sentence expresses personal enjoyment, approval, or a wish; related English words do not guarantee the same Latvian construction.

English you must become a relationship and a number

Latvian distinguishes familiar singular tu and plural jūs, with jūs also used for polite singular address. English does not mark those distinctions. A first message to an unfamiliar recipient may need a different form from a note to a close friend. Follow the established conversation and keep matching verb and possessive forms consistent.

Do not infer multiple recipients simply because the chosen Latvian address uses a plural-looking form. Polite singular agreement needs attention to the person actually described. A customer template meant for both individuals and groups should be checked as two use cases rather than assembled from interchangeable pronouns.

Place relationships and spelling carry practical information

Latvian case endings express relationships that English often marks with prepositions. Being in Riga is expressed with Rīgā; movement or departure needs its own construction. A name copied from a dictionary may need an inflected form in a sentence, while an official address quoted as an identifier should remain recognizable.

Keep long-vowel marks and other Latvian diacritics. They are part of normal spelling, not optional decoration for a polished page. In a personal name, a missing mark can interfere with recognition or an exact lookup. Preserve the official source spelling alongside any technical fallback required by a system that cannot accept the characters.
