Kinyarwanda to English: distinguish identity, location, and noun-class reference
English is can hide two different source constructions
Kinyarwanda distinguishes relevant identity statements with ni from location constructions using a form of -ri. “Ni umwarimu” can be “They are a teacher” for one person whose gender is unspecified. “Ari mu biro” can be “They are in the office.” English uses are in both, but the source describes different relationships.
Do not translate every ni or -ri form by copying the same surrounding words. Identify whether the sentence gives a person’s occupation, a description, or their location. In an arrival update, the difference between identifying the office worker and locating that person at the office determines what the recipient learns.
A noun-class prefix changes more than the noun’s beginning
Umwarimu means a teacher; abarimu means teachers. Kinyarwanda commonly marks number through such prefix changes, and agreement elsewhere in the sentence can point back to the same noun class. English may need its own plural noun and pronoun rather than an extra literal word for the prefix.
Use agreement to recover the antecedent before simplifying. A short element inside a verb may refer to an object already mentioned, not to a new item. If the message contains both people and documents, track each class reference separately so English they or it does not accidentally switch to the wrong group.
A formal-looking plural can address one person
Kinyarwanda can use plural forms in respectful address to an individual. A greeting or request with that form is not enough evidence that several recipients are involved. Recover the actual person count from the exchange before translating an instruction with English you.
Conversely, an instruction to a group must stay plural in meaning even though English uses the same pronoun. Clarify the group when the practical task depends on who should act. Preserve courtesy through a suitable English request and greeting without adding an invented title or repeatedly capitalizing You.
Verb morphology and conversational timing need to survive the English order
Kinyarwanda verbs can package participant and tense/aspect information inside forms that English expresses with several words. Identify whether the message states an activity, its completion, or an intended action before selecting an English tense. Translating only a recognizable root can omit who acts or whether the task has happened.
Ordinary written Kinyarwanda also does not show every tonal distinction heard in speech. A very short unmarked source may need the rest of the sentence to establish a reading. Do not fill a missing interpretation with a neighboring language’s familiar form. Kinyarwanda and Rundi share substantial structure, but a translation should still interpret the actual Kinyarwanda words, agreement, and intended timeline rather than treating the standards as automatically interchangeable.
