English to Kinyarwanda: identify the type of “be” and the class of the noun
A teacher and an office location need different patterns
English uses be both to identify a person and to locate them. Kinyarwanda distinguishes relevant ni identity statements from location forms of -ri. “They are a teacher” can be “Ni umwarimu” when referring to one person in context; “They are in the office” can be “Ari mu biro.” The same English are does not prescribe the same target construction.
First establish whether singular they or an actual group is intended. The examples describe one person, not several. A source with unspecified gender should not be turned into a plural group just because English uses they. Keep occupation, location, and person count as separate decisions before composing the sentence.
Changing teacher to teachers changes agreement too
Umwarimu is a teacher, while abarimu are teachers. The noun’s number is expressed through a prefix pattern rather than an English-style s ending. Associated verbs, demonstratives, and references can require matching agreement. A target sentence about several teachers should not retain forms that refer to one merely because the head noun was changed successfully.
This matters in group instructions and meeting notices. Identify the actual noun class rather than treating every plural as the same prefixed pattern. Kinyarwanda noun classes have useful tendencies but are not a simple list of semantic boxes into which any English item can be placed by guesswork. Choose the noun and its established class together.
English you leaves respectful singular and ordinary plural unresolved
Kinyarwanda can use plural forms to address one person respectfully. An English message to one unfamiliar recipient may therefore need a different form from an informal individual request, while a genuine group instruction also needs its number preserved. Follow the relationship in the exchange rather than converting every you to one default form.
The greeting and the request should remain coherent. A first meeting and a message to a close friend do not necessarily use the same conversational opening. Preserve the intended courtesy without adding an invented honorific or a social relationship that the English writer did not state.
The verb must retain the participants and the event’s status
Kinyarwanda verbal forms can express who acts and can refer to an object through attached markers. Identify actor, recipient, and affected item before translating a request about sending or collecting something. English word order is not a sufficient guide to the target’s internal marking.
Completion, ongoing activity, and future intention also need their own interpretation. Do not translate only the English verb root and drop the auxiliary’s contribution. A completed report and a plan to begin the report are different messages. Keep the intended Kinyarwanda construction throughout rather than borrowing a superficially similar Rundi phrase merely because the two languages share much of their grammatical background.
