Georgian to English: unpack compact forms without inventing a subject
Look inside a word before calling it missing
Georgian can attach elements that English writes separately. სახლში corresponds to in the house, while სახლია expresses is a house. A fluent English sentence may therefore contain more words than its Georgian source. That expansion can be necessary grammar, rather than evidence that the translation has added an unsupported detail.
When reading an address description or a property message, check the relationship expressed by a suffix before choosing the English preposition. House, in the house, and a statement that something is a house perform different jobs. Copying only the familiar noun stem into English loses the distinction that made the original message useful.
Follow the verb’s participants
Georgian verbal morphology can refer to subjects and objects. An English version often needs to express those participants through pronouns or noun phrases in a more fixed order. Before polishing the style, identify the actor, the thing affected, and any recipient. A grammatical English paragraph can still reverse a transaction if those roles are assigned incorrectly.
Include adjacent sentences when the source leaves a participant understood. A short extracted form may not identify a person well enough for a confident English he or she. Repeating a known name can improve clarity when several people are involved, but choosing that name requires evidence from the passage. Do not turn a convenient interpretation into an invented identity.
Report a report as a report
The Georgian grammar documents the attached indirect-speech marker in წერსო, writes as someone said. In a suitable English context, the translation may need wording such as reportedly or someone said that, rather than a bare assertion. The distinction matters in a forwarded message because it tells the reader whether the writer is reporting another person’s claim.
Preserve the attribution where it affects trust or responsibility. If a notice says that a supplier is said to have sent an item, changing it into a direct confirmation can mislead the recipient. Check both who originally supplied the information and who is now relaying it. An elegant English sentence should not silently strengthen the evidence.
English negatives need their full force
არ and ვერ are not interchangeable clues: the latter includes inability in relevant constructions. Read a negative with the action it modifies before choosing not or cannot. An English reader responding to an obstacle needs to know whether someone is unable to act, declining to act, or simply describing an event that did not occur.
Georgian time and aspect also interact with case and agreement, so a noun’s position alone is a weak guide to its role. Review the whole clause after interpreting the verb. For practical use, compare the final English with the original for participant roles, time, attribution, and the force of negatives; these checks protect meaning better than preserving the source’s exact word order.
