Filipino to Basque: follow the event roles across two different systems

The same Filipino pronoun family can mark different relationships

NIU’s Filipino lesson illustrates ko both in ownership and in an actor role. In Kotse ko ito, the car belongs to the speaker. In its example about buying a dress for Rosa, ko instead identifies the buyer. These are not two interchangeable meanings of possession. Tagalog-based Filipino uses the surrounding construction to distinguish a person associated with a noun from a person responsible for an event.

For Basque, this means an expression corresponding to my cannot be chosen just because ko appears. If the source reports a purchase, the target must identify the buyer within that event. If it identifies the speaker’s car, the target must express ownership. A purchasing message can even name a buyer and a beneficiary without saying that the buyer owns the purchased item, so resolving the roles prevents a particularly misleading shortcut.

Basque auxiliary information is not an extra ownership claim

Laka’s Basque grammar illustrates igela agertu da, a frog has appeared, alongside Josebak igela ikusi du, Joseba has seen a frog. The frog participates in both events, but the second also has a seeing participant marked with ergative case. The auxiliary construction changes accordingly. Its traditional explanation using be and have does not mean that the second sentence asserts that Joseba owns the frog.

That point matters when a Filipino source contains an ng-form actor pronoun. Translating its role into a Basque transitive construction can lead to an auxiliary described as have, yet this is not a second translation of possessive ko. A reader needs the completed event of buying or seeing, rather than an additional statement of ownership invented from the auxiliary’s dictionary gloss.

The EHU grammar further explains that Basque auxiliary agreement can register absolutive, ergative and dative participants. Filipino source pronouns must therefore be understood as participants with roles before their person and number can be reflected in Basque. A Filipino clause may foreground the purchased item while another expression identifies the buyer; the target auxiliary cannot assign its person markers simply by following the order in which those expressions appear.

An absent pronoun can still matter to the target form

The Basque account notes that agreement remains necessary when a corresponding pronoun is not overtly pronounced. This makes a short Filipino continuation potentially demanding: an actor recoverable from the conversation may still affect the Basque auxiliary. Omitting a repeated name in the translation does not remove that participant from the event. The result must still represent whether the buyer is the speaker or somebody previously mentioned.

The useful distinction in this direction is between foregrounding an item, identifying an event participant and stating who owns something. Filipino ko can contribute to different constructions, while Basque distributes event roles across case and auxiliary agreement. Keeping those layers apart allows a translation to say that I bought an item for Rosa without implying that Rosa bought it, or that every occurrence of a have-type auxiliary is a claim about somebody’s property.
