Filipino to Afrikaans: buying an item does not by itself identify its owner

Nila can identify an actor or a possessor

A Filipino message about collecting a bicycle might identify the people who bought it, the person who uses it and its current owner. Those roles can overlap, but they are not automatically identical. Before writing the Afrikaans version, determine which relationship each short pronoun actually expresses.

Northern Illinois University’s Tagalog grammar gives nila in a possession example about their dog. It also uses nila for the people who bought a car in Binili nila ang kotse. The pronoun’s identity does not make these two relationships the same: one expression identifies a possessor, while the other identifies the actor in a purchase.

These Tagalog-based examples are useful for Filipino translation without treating every Philippine language as having the same system. Read the predicate and noun phrase together. A pronoun following an item noun can contribute possession, while a pronoun associated with the buying predicate can identify who performed the action.

Afrikaans also requires the relationship to be read in context

Afrikaans.com’s teaching slides place hulle in a subject-pronoun example and also list it among possessive forms before a noun. They separately illustrate hulle s’n in a construction identifying something as theirs. Consequently, an Afrikaans pronoun cannot be evaluated only by matching its spelling to an English gloss such as they or their.

For the bicycle collection, a statement that a group bought the bicycle should remain a statement about the purchase. It should not be shortened into a claim that the bicycle belongs to that group unless the Filipino source establishes ownership. Someone may purchase an item as a gift or buy it on another person’s behalf.

The distinction works in the other direction too. A Filipino phrase identifying their bicycle does not necessarily report that they bought it. A translation adding a purchase would invent part of the item’s history. Keep possession, acquisition and temporary use as separate facts whenever the source keeps them separate.

Track changes of participant during a handover

An exchange can first identify the purchasers and then ask a different person to collect the bicycle. The collector does not become an owner merely by receiving the instruction. Resolve later pronouns against the established people and the specific action, rather than assigning every plural reference to whichever group was named most recently.

If the sender corrects the name of the collector, that correction may leave the buyers and owner unchanged. If ownership is corrected instead, the collection arrangement may still stand. An effective Afrikaans message preserves those independent relationships. Use the full clause to decide whether a reference concerns the acting group or possession, and use an ownership statement only where the Filipino message actually makes one. This keeps a practical handover clear without converting every occurrence of nila into a property claim or every mention of an item into a purchase report.
