Fijian to Welsh: translate a short answer together with its question

An affirmative word can confirm a negative proposition

A Fijian reply consisting of a short affirmative word cannot always be translated safely in isolation. The preceding question establishes what the speaker confirms. When preparing a Welsh version of a conversation, preserve the resulting fact rather than selecting a target answer from a dictionary entry for yes.

Schütz and Komaitai’s Lessons in Fijian explicitly contrasts English and Fijian answers to a negative question about someone going. In their Fijian example, an affirmative reply is followed by a clause confirming that the person did not go. A literal English yes inserted without that clause could suggest the opposite event to a reader using English response conventions.

For an attendance exchange, establish whether the person attended before deciding how to word the answer. Agreement with a question containing a negative does not automatically assert attendance. If the reply is separated from the question during copying, include enough context to retain what is actually being confirmed.

Welsh answers also depend on the construction being answered

The Open University’s beginner Welsh lesson distinguishes several question-and-answer patterns. A question beginning Dych chi receives Ydw or Nac ydw in its examples; a question with Ydy e or Ydy hi receives Ydy or Nac ydy. Questions beginning with an identifying name or profession instead use Ie or Nage. The lesson does not treat one pair as a replacement for every affirmative or negative answer.

That distinction is illustrated in a dialogue about a doctor. Confirming his profession and confirming that he is working use different affirmative responses. The content may concern the same person, but the form of the question affects the reply. Reusing the first response throughout the translated dialogue would ignore this grammatical difference.

These Welsh examples are not a ready-made translation of the Fijian departure exchange. They provide a reason to translate the question and answer as a connected unit. After deciding whether the event occurred, select a Welsh question and matching response that convey that fact, rather than copying the polarity word alone.

Keep the practical consequence consistent

Imagine a coordinator checking whether a volunteer failed to attend. The translated reply must leave the coordinator with the correct attendance record. If a short answer could be read in two ways, preserving a brief restatement of what happened can be more useful than reproducing the source’s brevity at the expense of its meaning.

Finally, check the follow-up sentence against the answer. A reply confirming nonattendance should not be followed by a translation implying that the person was present, unless the source itself corrects the earlier statement. Consistency across the exchange matters more than matching each isolated affirmative or negative word with a fixed Welsh equivalent.
