Fijian to Basque: plural-shaped address does not prove several listeners

Resolve a respectful address before counting its recipients

Fijian pronoun categories can carry respectful meanings beyond literal number. Joseph Hong describes dual forms addressing certain strangers and dual or trial forms in particular kinship relationships even when only one person is involved. A Basque translation should therefore not introduce several addressees solely because a source reference belongs to a nonsingular category.

This does not make literal number irrelevant. In Hong’s ordinary number account, dual identifies two and trial covers three or a few, without an exact universal boundary against plural. The translation problem is deciding which use occurs in this exchange. A source reference to a pair of visitors and a respectful reference to one relative need different participant interpretations even if their pronoun categories look similar.

Where the source is respectful, preserve the relationship without converting deference into a numerical claim. Where two people are genuinely addressed, preserve both people. A translation can lose information by over-counting a respectful individual or by reducing an actual pair to one person merely because an honorific reading exists elsewhere.

Basque zu has a history that its modern meaning does not repeat

Itziar Laka’s Basque grammar explains that zu developed from an older plural address into a singular form, while zuek was created for plural reference. Its agreement morphology retains similarities to plural forms even though its modern reference is singular. A translator cannot recover the audience size by treating every historically plural-looking element as a present-day count.

This creates a useful comparison with Fijian, but not an identity. Fijian respectful uses described by Hong and the history of Basque zu are different phenomena. There is no rule that Fijian dual simply becomes Basque zu, or that trial becomes zuek. First establish whether the source concerns one listener or several, then choose the target address appropriate to the exchange.

Laka also explains that Basque agreement can remain necessary when the corresponding pronoun is not overtly expressed. Removing a repeated target pronoun does not remove its participant information from the clause. A Fijian respectful singular should not become an unexplained plural participant in the auxiliary merely because the translator leaves the address word unwritten.

A possessive reference adds another distinct relationship

Laka’s noun-phrase chapter illustrates gure haur txiki-a, our small baby, with a possessive expression preceding the noun and an adjective following it. It separately gives gure Alex, our Alex, demonstrating association with a named person rather than a claim that the person is property. These are attested Basque examples, not reconstructions of particular Fijian sentences.

When a Fijian exchange moves from addressing a relative to mentioning someone associated with the speaker’s group, distinguish those roles. The recipient of the message is not automatically a member of the group behind every our. Hong documents inclusive and exclusive possessive distinctions in Fijian; that source information must be interpreted rather than inferred from a Basque noun phrase alone. Preserve who is addressed, who belongs to the relevant group and who is being described as separate relationships.
