Estonian to Tamil: preserve the comparison rather than copying its ending

An Estonian degree ending may become a larger construction

Estonian adjectives have positive, comparative and superlative forms. The Estonian Language Institute’s table illustrates a comparative ending and both a longer superlative with kõige and a shorter superlative form. A Tamil translation should preserve that degree distinction without expecting to attach equivalent endings to a target adjective.

Schiffman’s grammar of standard spoken Tamil describes comparison through a construction with vida, rather than morphological comparative forms like those found in many European languages. The item used as the comparison standard takes an accusative form in the illustrated pattern. The target therefore expresses the relationship across several words instead of simply modifying the adjective’s ending.

Keep the two items on the correct sides of the comparison

Schiffman gives “anda viitte vida inda viidu perusaa irukku”, describing this house as larger than that house. In the illustrated order, the comparison standard comes first. An Estonian reader should follow the roles of the two houses, rather than assume that whichever item appears first is the larger one.

An original accommodation comparison makes the consequence clear: the present apartment being larger than the previous one is not the same as the previous apartment being larger. Both versions can contain the same two place names and the same size vocabulary. Before translating, identify the measured item and its standard; then preserve their relationship in the Tamil construction.

A superlative also needs its comparison group

The Estonian table distinguishes the greatest degree from a simple comparative and notes that not every adjective has a short superlative. The dictionary entry for hea adds an important irregular set: hea, parem and parim. A translator should recognize that these belong together even though the stems differ. Missing that relationship can turn best into merely good or mistake better for an unrelated quality.

For the spoken-Tamil superlative construction he presents, Schiffman uses a locative domain plus emphasis. His example identifies a house as the largest within Madurai. The comparison group is part of that construction. If an Estonian source leaves the group implicit, determine it from the passage rather than invent a wider claim such as largest everywhere.

Good is not always a ranking of physical quality

The hea entry covers pleasantness, meeting requirements, closeness in relationships and positive things more generally. Its best-friend example concerns a relationship, while another example evaluates wine within the speaker’s experience. The shared Estonian degree vocabulary does not make those meanings interchangeable. Select the target expression after deciding what kind of evaluation the writer makes.

For this direction, keep three elements visible during interpretation: the quality being measured, the item being evaluated and the comparison set. A larger room, a better practical option and a closest friend may all require comparative reasoning, but they are not the same lexical choice. The Tamil result should reconstruct the intended evaluation in an appropriate register; the spoken patterns documented here should not be presented as a complete account of formal written Tamil.
