Estonian to Punjabi: ta and nad distinguish number even when a Punjabi direct pronoun does not

One absent participant differs from several absent participants

Ta tuli reports one third-person participant coming; Nad tulid reports several. The Estonian explanatory dictionary identifies tema or ta as singular and nemad or nad as plural. A Punjabi rendering needs to preserve that difference even where the corresponding direct pronoun has the same visible form for one person and several people.

This matters in an arrival update. One guest arriving does not establish that the entire invited group is present. Conversely, reporting a group as a single participant can misrepresent who is available. Estonian supplies the number through both the pronoun choice and the relevant verb form, so that information should not disappear merely because the target pronoun is less explicit.

Punjabi direct and case-marked forms distribute the information differently

Gill and Gleason’s reference grammar explains that Punjabi deictic third-person pronouns do not distinguish gender or number in their direct forms. Its paradigm gives ਉਹ for the remote direct pronoun in both singular and plural. The same written form therefore does not by itself establish the number expressed by Estonian ta or nad.

The paradigm makes number distinctions in other forms, including the oblique singular ਉਹ and plural ਉਹਨਾਂ. Thus the translator cannot treat a direct-pronoun entry as a complete substitute for every Estonian inflected pronoun. A participant referred to as arriving, being spoken about or receiving something may require a different target construction and case form.

Estonian talle and neile distinguish one recipient from several. The dictionary’s paradigms connect these with the singular and plural third-person pronouns. If an arrival account continues with something being given to the guests, that recipient distinction still matters. The target must follow the actual group rather than retain a singular recipient simply because a preceding Punjabi direct pronoun looked singular to an inexperienced reader.

Gender and emphasis are additional decisions rather than synonyms for number

Neither Estonian ta nor nad alone identifies the participants’ gender. The Punjabi grammar likewise notes the absence of gender contrast in these direct pronouns, while other parts of Punjabi grammar can require agreement choices. A translation should not invent a male guest solely because a dictionary supplies a masculine verb example alongside an ungendered pronoun.

Estonian tema and nemad are the fuller forms used in stressed positions, contrasted in the dictionary with unstressed ta and nad. A message emphasizing that those people arrived, rather than somebody else, can therefore carry more than a head count. The target should retain the intended contrast through its own available resources rather than assuming the longer source spelling merely names another set of people.

For an Estonian attendance exchange, keep three questions distinct: how many participants are referred to, what role they have in each clause and whether the writer is contrasting them with others. Punjabi’s direct pronoun can leave distinctions unexpressed that appear elsewhere in its construction. The complete translation should still distinguish the arrival of one guest from several and one recipient from a group.
