Spanish to Punjabi: llegué may leave the speaker’s gender unstated

A Spanish arrival verb does not identify a man or a woman

Spanish Llegué temprano can be spoken by a man or a woman without changing llegué. The verb identifies first-person singular past time but does not encode the speaker’s gender. A Punjabi version using a gender-sensitive arrival form may consequently need information that is not present in those two Spanish words.

The Punjabi reference grammar by Harjeet Singh Gill and Henry A. Gleason explains gender and number inflection in its past system and lists ਆਇਆ among the forms of come. The feminine counterpart ਆਈ also appears in the Western Australian Punjabi curriculum’s arrival example. These differences belong to the Punjabi construction, not to an imagined masculine or feminine ending on Spanish llegué.

Other Spanish words can supply the missing information

Compare Llegué cansado with Llegué cansada. The Spanish arrival verb remains identical, while the adjective referring to the speaker changes. In such a sentence the surrounding agreement can provide evidence for the corresponding Punjabi form. Looking only at the verb would ignore information already supplied by the author.

In a short arrival update, however, no such adjective may appear. A translator should not infer the speaker’s gender from the destination, the time of arrival, or the fact that the message is informal. Those details can identify when and where the journey ended without resolving the agreement choice required by a particular target wording.

The same issue can occur in third person: Ha llegado does not itself distinguish a male from a female subject, whereas Ella ha llegado explicitly identifies a woman in an ordinary personal reference. An earlier Spanish line may already establish who is arriving. Translating the complete update preserves that connection more reliably than treating each sentence as a self-contained gender clue.

Do not turn every past ending into a label for the actor

The arrival examples concern an intransitive event: somebody comes or arrives. Punjabi past transitive constructions can have different agreement patterns. A target ending that matches an object in another construction must not be read as evidence that the actor has changed gender. The reference grammar treats these relationships in the wider syntax of its verbal phrases.

This distinction is practical when a Spanish message says both that the speaker arrived and that they delivered a parcel. Spanish can use first-person verbs for both actions, but Punjabi need not determine both verb forms through the same participant. Using the arrival pattern as a universal rule for the whole message would overlook the change in construction.

For Llegué temprano, the central question is whether the available Spanish context identifies the arriving person sufficiently for the chosen Punjabi wording. For Llegué cansada, the feminine adjective already supplies a relevant clue. Preserve that difference between absent and explicit information rather than inventing a gender for an isolated arrival report or discarding a gender distinction the source actually states.
