English to Divehi: preserve the vowels in Thaana
Thaana marks belong to the word
Divehi, also commonly written as Dhivehi in English, uses Thaana script. It runs from right to left, but it is not Arabic. Its vowel marks and sukun have essential roles. Do not strip the small marks as though they were optional decoration after copying a translated message.
ފެން means “water.” The signs around the consonants are part of how this word is written. A line that preserves only the main letter shapes may no longer represent the intended word. Inspect the result in a font and application that support Thaana before assuming an unfamiliar mark is an error.
Names and ordinary vocabulary need different treatment
An ordinary English noun should be expressed through its Divehi meaning. A person’s name or a booking identifier may instead need a conventional spelling or exact preservation. Do not translate every name by the meaning of its parts, and do not assume a sound transcription of an everyday English word is always the target expression the reader expects.
ގެ can mean “house.” In a full message, the target construction must still establish whether the writer means a home, a particular building, or another relationship involving the place. Short dictionary equivalents are useful starting points, but they do not settle the meaning of an entire location or delivery instruction.
Choose a voice for the relationship
Divehi has meaningful register differences, including respectful forms. A business request and a close personal exchange may therefore call for different target wording. English “you” and a brief “please” do not specify every social choice. Identify the recipient and setting before deciding whether a translation sounds appropriate.
For a general notice, aim for a consistent written voice. Do not combine a very deferential expression with unrelated casual wording merely because each word has a plausible English equivalent. If an established organisation has published Divehi terminology for a service, keep that terminology consistent in messages about the same service.
A script change does not change an identifier
A Thaana paragraph can include Latin product names, web addresses, and numerical reference strings. Those embedded items retain their own character order even while the surrounding prose runs from right to left. Do not reverse a code to make its appearance align with the text.
Check island and personal names against established spellings where available, especially when a reader must use them to find an address or reservation. Keep dates, quantities, and amounts exact, and establish any date convention before changing its representation. The final message should let the recipient identify the same journey, transaction, or person. A polished Divehi sentence is only practically useful when those reference details have survived the translation.
