Divehi to English: read Thaana marks before choosing a meaning
The source script is not an Arabic text in unusual letters
Divehi is written in Thaana, a distinct right-to-left script. Its vowels are normally written through combining marks, and a sukun marks a consonant without a following vowel in the relevant construction. Preserve these signs while identifying the source word. Removing them can erase information needed for an accurate reading.
ފެން means “water.” English may need “some water” or “the water” according to the message, but the source must first be read correctly. A font or copy-and-paste problem should be checked as a display issue rather than repaired by deleting small marks. Keep the original intact while consulting a dictionary.
Choose whether a word is vocabulary or an identifier
ގެ can mean “house.” A complete phrase may identify a particular home or form part of a name or address. Determine its function before replacing it with a dictionary gloss. A personal or house name may need a conventional English rendering rather than a literal translation of every component.
This distinction is useful in travel and delivery messages. A readable English description is not enough if it changes the name under which a reservation or address is recorded. Consult an established English spelling where available and retain enough location information to distinguish similarly named places.
Preserve the level of the message without literal ceremony
Divehi uses register distinctions that can communicate respect and social setting. English may express the corresponding courtesy through a clear request and suitable tone rather than an extra title attached to every pronoun. Identify whether the source is a public notice, professional message, or familiar exchange.
Do not assume all formal-looking wording makes an extraordinary promise or demand. Read the actual action and degree of obligation. A courteous enquiry should remain an enquiry, and an announcement should not become a personal command merely because an English imperative is shorter. Choose the target clause for what the line does in the exchange.
Check mixed-direction reference strings independently
Thaana prose can contain Latin letters, web addresses, and numbers with a different display direction. Compare the actual characters in a booking or payment reference before copying it into English. Reversing a string to match its visual position in a screenshot can corrupt an otherwise valid identifier.
Use a consistent English transliteration when no established spelling exists, but do not confuse pronunciation guidance with an exact representation of the written source. Finally, verify dates, quantities, and amounts against the original record. The English sentence should supply the articles, subjects, and connecting words its reader needs while retaining the same people and events, rather than adding facts solely to make the paragraph sound more definite.
