English to Bengali: match the relationship and the action
Choose a form of address before polishing the words
Bengali makes distinctions that English leaves inside a general “you.” আপনি is respectful, তুমি is familiar, and তুই belongs to particularly intimate or potentially disrespectful settings. A sentence for an unfamiliar customer should not inherit the most intimate form merely because the English is short. Identify the relationship and then check that the verb ending belongs to the same level of address.
Compare আপনি কেমন আছেন? and তুমি কেমন আছ? Both can ask “How are you?”, but they do not address the listener in the same way. The distinction is carried in both the pronoun and the verb. Changing only the first word is insufficient. In a saved response, keep the complete sentence together so a later edit does not combine parts from different levels.
Let Bengali carry the action in its own order
Bengali commonly orders a neutral sentence with the object before the verb. “I read books” can be আমি বই পড়ি, with পড়ি at the end. An English-shaped arrangement is not the standard against which to judge whether the Bengali is clear. First identify the action, then the person doing it and the thing it affects.
Verbs also express person through their endings across tense and aspect combinations. In a brief message, the ending may provide information that English normally writes as a separate subject. When you shorten a Bengali sentence, avoid deleting or changing an ending as though it were an optional extra. It may be doing essential grammatical work.
Use Bengali script without rearranging its vowel signs
Bengali writes from left to right, but some vowel signs appear before or around the consonant they follow in pronunciation. In কি, the vowel sign is visually placed to the left of ক even though the spoken sequence is ki. This is ordinary script behaviour, not a reason to reverse the characters after copying them.
Consonant combinations can also appear as joined shapes. Keep the text intact when pasting it into another application; a broken-looking character may be a font or rendering problem rather than a mistranslated word. For names and booking references, compare the final message with the original information instead of judging accuracy only by how familiar the letters look.
Aim for the reader’s everyday vocabulary
A Bengali-speaking audience may live in Bangladesh, India, or elsewhere, and everyday word preferences are not identical in every community. Where a message concerns a specific local service, use the terminology that service and its readers recognise. Do not assume one regional preference establishes the only valid word for all Bengali speakers.
English can compress several relationships into a label such as “order change request.” Before translating, decide whether the text requests a change, reports that a change was requested, or names a form. Bengali wording should make that action apparent. An expanded, accurate label is more useful than preserving three English nouns in sequence and leaving the reader to infer their relationship.
