Dogri to Querétaro Otomi: eating together, accompanying someone and counting the participants

A companion is not the person receiving the action

A Dogri account of a visit may say that someone ate with a friend. That friend is a fellow diner, not the meal and not necessarily the person who supplied it. Preserving the names while changing this relationship would describe a different encounter.

Palancar’s study of San Ildefonso Tultepec Otomi documents a construction with one participant before the verb and an associated participant after it. His opening example describes John eating with Peter. The two people take part together, even though they occupy different positions in the sentence.

This is a useful contrast with the flexible ordering described for Dogri by Sawhney. Do not use a word’s position alone to decide whether it names a companion, a recipient or an object. Read the full Dogri relationship first, then assess how the complete target construction represents it.

A main participant and a companion need not receive equal attention

Palancar explains that the construction gives greater discourse prominence to one actor while treating the other as an associate. The difference is about how the event is presented, not a claim that the companion is absent or uninvolved. His analysis is specific to the documented Querétaro variety rather than a prescription for every Otomi language.

For a Dogri travel update centred on a parent, a sentence about that parent accompanying a child should remain centred on the same person where the surrounding narrative requires it. Recasting every shared event as an equal list of names can weaken the connection with the preceding sentence.

At the same time, being less prominent does not make the companion optional in meaning. A message confirming that a visitor will arrive with a colleague differs from a message confirming only the visitor. The host may need to arrange another place. Preserve the additional participant even when the target construction packages that person differently from the main topic.

Do not turn a grammatical number label into a new headcount

The paper contrasts its special construction with ordinary coordination. In one example, a coordinated pair with the relevant verbal marking is interpreted as talking with another contextually recoverable person, rather than merely talking to each other. The presence of two written names therefore does not always exhaust the participants in that construction.

This matters for Dogri reports of meetings. Two colleagues discussing a matter between themselves and two colleagues speaking with a supervisor describe different arrangements. An omitted but understood participant should not vanish from the interpretation merely because that person is not repeated as a full noun phrase.

The author also shows that the distribution of dual and plural marking changes between this construction and other parts of the grammar. A label such as dual cannot safely be read as an independent headcount without identifying the construction first.

For a practical translation check, list the people who actually share the meal, journey or conversation. Then distinguish the person whose story is being followed from the companion joining that activity. If the Dogri message leaves a companion understood from an earlier sentence, retain that connection instead of inventing a new name or deleting the role. This preserves the encounter without forcing Dogri word order onto Otomi.
