Divehi to Querétaro Otomi: accompanying a group is not simply counting two people

Read the Divehi relationship before counting participants

Divehi marks a sociative relationship with case morphology. Gnanadesikan gives kudin̊ nā for being with the children. This short example already contains a group: a person accompanying those children need not form a party of exactly two individuals. The translation must preserve the people involved, rather than interpreting grammatical association as a numerical pair.

Divehi also has an associative plural used with personal names and certain personal expressions. In Gnanadesikan’s analysis, a name carrying that plural can refer to the named person together with associates. It does not necessarily identify several people bearing the same name. When such a group accompanies someone, first distinguish the named individual from the wider set represented by the expression.

These two source patterns pose different interpretation tasks. A sociative phrase relates participants to an event; an associative plural helps identify a group. Neither alone supplies an exact count. Before selecting target number morphology, recover any actual number from the message instead of treating a grammatical label as a replacement for the source participants.

The documented Otomi construction connects two sets

Palancar’s primary study of San Ildefonso Tultepec Otomi describes a split coordination construction for accompanying events. Its dual morphology can relate two participant sets rather than exactly two individuals. One attested narrative has two children joining their grandmother to live together: three people participate despite the dual form.

This is directly relevant to the Divehi phrase involving children. A target construction labeled dual should not automatically make the translator remove one child, replace the plural group with a single companion, or rewrite the source as two travellers. The construction’s grouping and the number of individuals answer different questions.

Palancar contrasts a larger accompanying group in an example glossed He plays with his friends. Plural morphology has a particular abundance interpretation within this construction. He also documents an alternative borrowed preposition for accompaniment. Consequently, not every Divehi sociative expression should be forced into the same Otomi verbal pattern. The source relation remains the starting point; the target construction has its own distribution.

Use evidence from the relevant Querétaro variety

The Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro identifies hñöñhö as the language of San Ildefonso Tultepec in Amealco and places it within the Northwestern Otomi grouping. That makes Palancar’s locality-specific evidence useful for a Querétaro Otomi guide. It does not establish that every Otomi variety uses the same number system or accompaniment construction.

For a Divehi translation, the distinction matters most when a form seems surprising: apparent dual marking with several people is not sufficient evidence of an error in this documented construction. At the same time, a form taken from another Otomi language is not automatically an interchangeable correction. Keep the actual Divehi group intact and interpret the target through the relevant variety’s grammar.
