Divehi to Azerbaijani: a description can acquire a personal ending without becoming an action

A source adjective can already be a predicate

Gnanadesikan describes Divehi adjectival sentences in which the adjective makes a complete predication without a supporting verb or copula. These are descriptions rather than fragments. Her northern and standard Malé grammar also distinguishes these tenseless constructions from verbal alternatives used when a tense must be specified.

Azerbaijani teaching examples in the Peace Corps introduction express descriptions with personal predicate endings. Mən ağıllıyam means I am clever in its paradigm, with a joined ending on the adjective. Translating a short Divehi description can therefore require additional target morphology without adding a new action or changing the person described.

Identity statements and property statements are related but distinct

The same Azerbaijani lesson applies personal endings to occupational nouns, illustrating Mən həkiməm, I am a doctor. This demonstrates a parallel target strategy for a nominal classification and an adjectival description. It does not mean that every Divehi property word should be interpreted as a noun naming a profession or category.

The Divehi grammar distinguishes nonverbal adjectival statements from equational constructions with a nonverbal copula. Before selecting the Azerbaijani predicate, establish whether the source says what someone is or describes a property they have. A target ending can support either type of assertion, but the lexical choice must preserve the original distinction.

Negation can relocate the personal information

The Peace Corps paradigm contrasts affirmative Mən müəlliməm with negative Mən müəllim deyiləm. The negative expression includes deyil and carries the first-person ending there, rather than retaining the affirmative noun ending and merely inserting a free negative alongside it. The complete construction matters.

Divehi nonverbal negation uses nūn̊ and can involve negative-concord morphology on the adjective or nominal complement. A source adjective ending associated with this negative environment should therefore not be carried into Azerbaijani as though it expressed a stronger degree or a different number. Its contribution belongs to the source negative construction, which the target expresses differently.

Tense must not be inferred from the absence of a verb

Gnanadesikan explicitly notes that Divehi’s simplest adjectival sentences are tenseless; a verbal construction is needed when tense is specified. Thus the source’s visible lack of a verb does not give a complete account of the message’s time setting. Context and the exact construction determine whether the description is intended as a general characterization or part of a temporally situated report.

In a Divehi-to-Azerbaijani introduction, keep three decisions separate: who is described, which property or identity is asserted, and whether the source denies it. If the message also specifies a time, retain that information rather than treating the introductory course’s present paradigm as a universal target form. A joined personal ending can preserve the person; a nominal or adjectival stem preserves the assertion’s content; and the negative construction preserves its polarity. Judging only by whether both versions contain a separate word equivalent to be would miss the grammatical choices that actually make the statement accurate.
