Spanish to Azerbaijani: personal a does not automatically become a dative ending

Decide whether the person is affected directly or receives something

The RAE–ASALE grammatical glossary gives Ayer vi a Pedro as an example of a direct object. The preposition a marks a specific animate referent; it does not turn Pedro into the recipient of an unstated object. In Azerbaijani, translating that a mechanically with a dative ending would confuse the person seen with somebody to whom an action is directed.

The same glossary distinguishes indirect objects, including recipients, from these personal-a direct objects. It also explains that a Spanish clitic can duplicate a named indirect object without introducing a second recipient. For Azerbaijani translation, first establish the participant’s actual role; the number of visible referring expressions does not tell you how many people are involved.

This matters when a Spanish message mentions seeing a person and giving that person a document. The person has different grammatical relationships in the two events. A repeated name or repeated a phrase is not enough reason to assign the same target case throughout the message.

Azerbaijani direct-object marking also distinguishes the object’s reference

Garibova and Aliyeva’s primary grammar contrasts Mən məqaləni oxuyuram, reading the article, with an unmarked-object construction for reading an article. In their account, the marked accusative identifies the relevant direct object more specifically. Spanish article choice and object reference therefore matter alongside the earlier distinction between direct object and recipient.

Their discussion also notes that personal pronouns and names occur with marked accusative when serving as direct objects. A Spanish personal-a phrase identifying Pedro is consequently not a reason to bypass accusative. Preserve the named person as the affected object rather than reinterpreting him as a destination.

The grammar’s marked and unmarked letter-writing examples further connect case with position: an unmarked direct object immediately precedes the verb, while moving it requires marking in the pattern described. Spanish allows its own object placement and topic constructions. A target object ending should therefore be judged within the Azerbaijani sentence, not removed because the Spanish noun carried no comparable suffix.

Recipient and destination patterns share dative morphology, but not a role

The University of Texas-hosted Azerbaijani teaching grammar illustrates Vahid Sevilə maşın aldı: Vahid bought a car for Sevil. The person benefiting receives dative marking, while the car is the purchased item. This gives a concrete target contrast for a Spanish account about somebody buying something for another person, rather than buying or seeing that person.

The teaching grammar separately explains dative for movement toward a place or person. A Spanish phrase with a can likewise be part of a destination expression, but that similarity does not make every personal a a movement destination. Interpret the verb before selecting the Azerbaijani relationship.

The same resource emphasizes case endings over a rigid position-based identification of direct and indirect objects. In a Spanish sentence with two people and a transferred object, keep the actor, recipient and item distinct even if the target rearranges them. The useful comparison is each participant’s role and case, not the order in which Spanish happened to mention the names.
