Divehi to Afrikaans: an adjective’s new ending need not mean a stronger description

Separate the property from its sentence position

Gnanadesikan describes Divehi adjectives as having little morphology and no case inflection. Their use as predicates can distinguish them from nouns: an adjective can make a predication without a copula or verb. This means that a short source description may already be a statement, rather than a noun phrase waiting for a missing action word.

Afrikaans organizes a comparable distinction differently. Taalportaal contrasts die vinnige motor, the fast car, with Die motor is vinnig, the car is fast. The adjective’s form and the copula depend on its target construction. A Divehi descriptive statement should therefore not be translated by preserving the source’s word count or assuming that an added target ending must intensify the property.

A source plural adjective identifies number rather than degree

Although most Divehi adjectives do not inflect for number, Gnanadesikan lists a few that do, including boḍu, big, with plural boḍeti. Such a source contrast can help identify that several entities are being described. It does not itself say that those entities are bigger than another group.

This matters when describing available rooms, objects or other choices. A Divehi plural adjective should not become an Afrikaans comparative merely because its form differs from the singular dictionary entry. Preserve the number of entities through the target noun phrase, and select the adjective form appropriate to that phrase. Number, attributive form and comparative degree are separate decisions.

A comparison may need a suffix even when the source uses a phrase

Gnanadesikan describes Divehi comparison through phrasal means rather than comparative adjective inflection, including vure for the comparison relation. Afrikaans can express greater degree with a suffixed comparative, while also allowing periphrastic forms for some adjectives. Taalportaal illustrates slimmer, smarter, and meer ontsteld, more upset.

A source comparison can consequently become a shorter target adjective without losing its comparison meaning. The reverse mistake is equally possible: retaining a positive target adjective while translating only the comparison standard can weaken or obscure the intended relation. Identify which entity is being compared and the direction of the comparison before selecting the Afrikaans form.

Less is not obtained by choosing any comparative ending

Taalportaal distinguishes greater and lesser degree, specifying that lesser degree uses minder rather than the greater-degree suffix -er. A Divehi statement that one option has less of a property therefore needs its comparison direction preserved. Using an ordinary suffixed comparative can reverse the recommendation even when the correct options are named.

For this direction, read a descriptive source in layers. Decide whether it identifies a property inside a noun phrase or asserts that property of an entity; determine whether any unusual Divehi adjective form signals plural reference; then establish whether the message compares degrees at all. Only after those decisions should the Afrikaans adjective and copular construction be chosen. The result may contain an extra copula, an attributive ending or a comparative suffix, but each must serve its own function rather than act as a general marker that the source sounded more emphatic.
