Danish to Inuktitut: the house and the person beside it take different roles

A location can be expressed through a relationship to a landmark

Danish Universal Dependencies distinguishes locational predicates from objects and describes prepositional phrases among the relationships attached to a clause. A Danish statement about somebody beside a building concerns that person’s location; it does not automatically transfer the building to anyone.

Pirurvik’s South Qikiqtaaluk Tusaalanga lesson analyses Piita illuup sanianiittuq, Peter is beside the house. Its explanation distinguishes the person located, the landmark, and a relational element concerning the landmark’s side. Those components work together within one location statement.

For an original Danish direction, the person being found and the building used to locate them must remain distinct. Recognizing a house-related noun is not sufficient if the target construction places the building beside the person instead. The target must preserve which entity supplies the landmark and which entity occupies the described position.

The landmark’s ending does not count the located people

Tusaalanga explains a singular landmark’s -up ending in the illustrated construction and notes a change to the landmark’s final consonant when the ending is attached. This contribution belongs to the landmark, not to a universal plural marker for the sentence’s subject.

Danish nouns distinguish singular and plural, and a Danish location sentence can name either one person or several people beside the same building. The Inuktitut result must preserve the people’s count independently of the landmark’s construction.

For an original Danish meeting instruction, compare two visitors beside one house with one visitor beside two landmarks mentioned in a longer description. The existence of a pair somewhere in the source does not determine which target word should express dual number. Identify exactly what the Danish numeral counts.

Likewise, the landmark’s changed shape need not indicate that a different building was introduced. A noun altered by the target construction can still refer to the same house already established by the Danish message. Do not replace it with an unrelated dictionary form simply to make its citation spelling reappear.

The predicate must agree with the located subject

The South Qikiqtaaluk lesson separately illustrates predicate endings for a single person, two dogs, and birds beside the house. Its explanation states that the ending matches the subject. The landmark can stay the same while the predicate changes with the entity located.

A Danish reader should consequently not infer a new location from every target predicate change. In an original sequence, one visitor may arrive at the meeting point and then be joined by another. The pair can remain beside the same house while the target’s participant-related form changes.

The examples here use the teaching source’s Latin transcription to explain the grammatical roles; the selected output is Inuktitut. The lesson describes South Qikiqtaaluk forms, so its exact paradigm should not be imposed on every variety as an identical universal spelling rule.

Read the location statement through three separate relationships: the entity being located, the landmark’s relational phrase, and the predicate’s participant agreement. Preserving those relationships makes the Danish direction usable even where Inuktitut organizes them in a compact construction.
