Spanish to Inuktitut: keep track of who understands whom

A short Spanish pronoun can change the whole question

A Spanish question about understanding can ask about comprehension generally, or about understanding a particular person. That difference matters before choosing the Inuktitut ending. The verb is not carrying the entire message alone: a small Spanish object pronoun can introduce the speaker as the person being understood, while the person answering remains the one doing the understanding.

Pirurvik’s South Qikiqtaaluk lesson contrasts tukisi vit?, asking whether you understand, with tukisi vinnga?, asking whether you understand me. Its teaching spaces separate the root and ending. The second form encodes both participants. These examples show why translating a Spanish question after overlooking its object can produce a grammatical question with a different purpose.

Separate the speaker, the addressee and the object

The RAE lists Spanish me and te as singular first-person and second-person weak pronouns. Their position beside a verb does not make them the person performing its action. When reading a source question, identify the subject from the full construction, then identify whom the object pronoun refers to. Otherwise a question addressed to another person can accidentally become a question about the speaker’s own understanding.

A practical distinction is between someone checking whether an explanation makes sense and someone asking whether their own speech is understood. Both situations concern comprehension, but only the second necessarily identifies the speaker as the object. The contrast in the Pirurvik examples lets a Spanish-speaking user notice this difference without treating every question about understanding as the same stock phrase.

The target lesson also illustrates qaujima vagit?, asking whether I know you, and qaujima vara?, asking whether I know him or her. Here the speaker remains the knower while the other participant changes. Reading the ending as merely a question marker would lose exactly the relationship that distinguishes the two questions.

Do not infer a person from Spanish grammatical gender alone

Spanish third-person weak pronouns distinguish several functions, and the RAE includes a neuter use of lo referring to a proposition, a neutral demonstrative or a predicate. Consequently, a Spanish question containing lo is not automatically about a male person. It might ask whether someone understands an earlier explanation. Establish that antecedent before selecting a target construction intended for a person.

This matters especially when the source is copied from a conversation without the preceding message. A masculine-looking form may point back to an entire statement rather than to a man. The Inuktitut lesson’s English glosses sometimes combine him and her; those glosses should not encourage replacing every Spanish lo or la with the same person-oriented example. The source reference still needs to be resolved.

These are South Qikiqtaaluk examples, presented here in the source’s Roman spelling so the endings can be compared clearly on a syllabic-target page. They illustrate participant relationships rather than providing a complete paradigm for every dialect or every sense of understanding. A change of script cannot repair a question whose speaker and object have already been confused.
