Danish to Azerbaijani: plural owners, öz and ordinary possession without added emphasis

Danish plural deres does not rule out an Azerbaijani own construction

Sproget.dk’s traditional standard guidance distinguishes a singular subject’s sin from a plural subject’s deres. When several Danish people refer to their own belongings, the plural construction normally uses deres rather than sin. The absence of sin therefore does not prove that the belongings belong to somebody else.

Garibova and Aliyeva illustrate Azerbaijani Onlar öz maşınlarında gələcəklər, saying that they will come in their own car. In this example, öz links the possession with the people who are also the subject. A Danish plural-owner sentence can require that relationship even though its ordinary source possessive is deres.

This is a useful contrast for shared travel arrangements. A group bringing its own car and a group using another group’s car make different claims about the vehicle. Translating Danish deres by one fixed Azerbaijani possessive without resolving the owner could collapse those claims. Follow the participants through the sentence rather than look only for the Danish singular reflexive form.

Azerbaijani öz need not add dramatic emphasis

The Azerbaijani grammar warns that öz is not always equivalent in emphasis to English own. It can perform the work of an ordinary possessive in a construction whose subject and owner coincide. Its appearance in a translation should not automatically be read as a new contrast or a stressed declaration of personal ownership.

The Danish source may simply state that a person likes their job or brings their belongings. An Azerbaijani construction with öz can preserve that ordinary relationship. Expanding the Danish meaning into specifically mine rather than anybody else’s would add a contrast that the source did not establish.

Conversely, where the Danish passage explicitly contrasts two owners, that contrast still needs expression. Do not erase it on the assumption that all possessives are neutral. The source context determines whether ownership is being emphasized; the target construction determines how its participants are linked.

The owner’s identity and the noun’s ending are separate questions

The Azerbaijani authors list onun as covering his, her and its, and explain that possessed nouns carry possessive endings. Danish hans and hendes can distinguish a male and female owner, while Danish min, mit and mine instead show agreement with the following noun. These are different grammatical dimensions.

When a Danish account alternates between two owners, an Azerbaijani gender-neutral possessive may need an explicit name or another identifying expression. The target noun’s possessive ending does not automatically restore the owner distinction that the Danish pronouns supplied. The choice concerns clarity of reference, not a requirement to add gender words to every phrase.

Finally, the Azerbaijani grammar gives ailəm as a possessive family expression that can stand without the separate first-person possessive pronoun. A shorter visible target phrase need not omit the owner: the suffix can already encode that relationship.

The Danish-to-Azerbaijani decision therefore has three parts: establish whether the owner coincides with the subject, decide whether the source emphasizes ownership, and choose a target construction that keeps the owner identifiable. A single dictionary match for deres or sin cannot answer all three.
