Danish to Afrikaans: adjective changes do not follow the same agreement system

A Danish adjective can show the noun phrase’s grammar

Danish Universal Dependencies describes adjective agreement with nouns in gender, number, and definiteness, including attributive and predicative positions. A changed adjective ending can therefore reflect the phrase it belongs to rather than a different descriptive meaning.

The Afrikaans overview instead highlights differences between attributive and predicative adjective forms. It also distinguishes comparison from that positional alternation. A Danish-to-Afrikaans translation should consequently not preserve a Danish ending as though it were a universal marker of the same noun feature.

For an original Danish product description, compare describing an item within a noun phrase with asserting a quality about that item in a complete sentence. Afrikaans can require a different adjective form because the construction changed. That difference is not necessarily evidence that the quality or the number of items changed.

Definiteness must be preserved through the whole noun phrase

The Danish overview identifies definiteness on nouns and agreement on determiners and adjectives. The Afrikaans overview also distinguishes definite and indefinite articles, but does not describe a matching Danish-style gender-agreement paradigm for adjectives.

For an original Danish inventory note, compare an identifiable object already discussed with an unspecified object meeting the same description. A translation must retain which kind of reference is intended without mechanically transferring every visible agreement ending from the Danish adjective.

This matters when a descriptive word occurs beside a noun whose singular or plural interpretation is already established. A change in the target adjective’s shape cannot be used alone to count the objects. Read the noun and its determining material together with the adjective’s position.

For a Danish request to inspect a particular item, translating it as any suitable item would broaden the instruction. Conversely, introducing definiteness into an open request could suggest that the listener should already know which item is meant. Those reference differences remain important even when the target descriptive root looks exactly right.

A comparison is not merely another positional ending

Both language overviews distinguish comparative and superlative degree. A target adjective change caused by attributive position should not be mistaken for a comparative, and a source comparative should not disappear into an ordinary descriptive form.

For an original Danish assessment, distinguish an object described as heavy from an object heavier than another, and from the heaviest object in the group. These establish a property, a comparison with a standard, and a ranking within a set. Afrikaans must preserve the intended relationship rather than merely select a familiar adjective spelling.

The Danish sentence can also place that comparison inside an identifying noun phrase. In that situation the translation has to preserve both which item is selected and how it compares. Correct comparative meaning would not compensate for turning a specific item into an unspecified one.

The practical reading separates three questions: what property the source names, whether it compares or ranks, and which noun phrase the description modifies. Afrikaans then expresses those relationships through its own article and adjective constructions. A visible resemblance between Danish and Afrikaans vocabulary is not sufficient evidence that their grammatical endings contribute the same information.
