Czech to Uyghur: questions, noun endings and fully written vowels

Do not carry Czech gender into the Uyghur noun phrase

Czech descriptions repeatedly identify a noun as masculine, feminine or neuter through agreement. Uyghur has no equivalent grammatical gender system. Indiana University identifies it as a Turkic language with vowel harmony and agglutination. Consequently, translating a Czech feminine noun does not require finding a feminine Uyghur adjective. The important information is the object and its qualities; a Czech agreement ending is not an additional meaning to reproduce.

This difference becomes useful when a Czech pronoun replaces something mentioned earlier. Its gender can point back to a noun without telling the reader whether the referent is a person. In Uyghur, reconstruct that reference from the preceding sentence rather than turning Czech masculine or feminine agreement into an assertion about sex. A product description and a description of its owner need different referents even when Czech uses the same gender.

A question needs its Uyghur construction

The CeLCAR Uyghur grammar checklist includes the question particle -مۇ and gives سىز ئوقۇتقۇچىمۇ؟ as a teacher question. Its relevance to Czech is structural: Czech can make a yes-or-no question through intonation without adding a comparable particle. A translation that merely leaves the declarative Uyghur wording and changes its punctuation can therefore miss part of the target construction.

The same checklist distinguishes بار and يوق for existence and absence. Czech sentences containing být need their meaning identified before a Uyghur form is chosen: locating something, identifying someone and saying that something exists are different jobs. Czech Jsem doma means that the speaker is at home; it is not simply a statement that a home exists. Translating the verb in isolation obscures that distinction.

Case endings are familiar, but their distribution changes

Czech v Praze, z Prahy and do Prahy distinguish location, origin and destination through prepositions together with case. Uyghur also distinguishes these relations, but CeLCAR lists suffixal locative, ablative and dative patterns. The Czech preposition and ending should therefore be interpreted together before choosing the Uyghur suffix; copying the Czech sequence as separate words is not a reliable way to preserve the relation.

Vowels remain visible when the script changes

The modified Arabic script commonly used for Uyghur writes its vowels explicitly, according to Indiana University. Moving from Czech Latin spelling therefore does not mean dropping the vowel information. Uyghur also has Latin and Cyrillic writing traditions, so a Latin transcription encountered elsewhere is not necessarily the same output format as an Arabic-script translation.

Czech acute accents principally indicate vowel length, while Czech stress normally falls at the beginning of the word. CeLCAR describes Uyghur stress as usually final and highlights vowel-harmony errors. These are separate reading tasks: Czech length marks do not supply Uyghur stress, and a suffix spelling cannot be selected solely by recognizing its Czech case equivalent.
