Czech to Inuinnaqtun: short introductions and a different spelling system

Latin letters do not make Czech pronunciation rules portable

The Northwest Territories government presents Inuinnaqtun in Roman orthography, listing a, i and u alongside aa, ii and uu. Czech also distinguishes short and long vowels, but Naughton describes acute marks as its ordinary indication of length. A Czech reader should therefore recognize that doubled target vowels belong to the target system. They are not evidence that the translation accidentally repeated a letter.

The government’s orthographic notes also identify ng and dj as single consonants and specify nng for double ng. This differs from simply counting individual Latin characters as sounds. In a Czech-to-Inuinnaqtun message, preserve those sequences rather than simplifying them to make the word look more familiar. The shared alphabet permits typing both languages, but it does not imply a shared set of letter-to-sound correspondences.

An introduction can be shorter than its Czech source

Czech frequently leaves out a subject pronoun because the verb identifies the person; Naughton gives Jsem doma as a complete first-person statement. That source habit helps explain why word counts are not a useful measure of completeness. When the message introduces a name, identify the function of the whole Czech expression before looking for separate target equivalents of every pronoun or verb.

The government’s Inuinnaqtun conversation sheet provides Atira ____ for my name is. It places this after Kinauvin?, asking a person’s name. These are documented conversational expressions rather than a word-for-word decomposition of Czech naming grammar. The person’s actual name fills the blank; the surrounding expression identifies what information is being supplied. A translator should not replace that name with its possible dictionary meaning.

A greeting and its reply perform different jobs

The same conversation sheet gives Qanuritpin? for a greeting asking how someone is, followed by Naammaktunga, I am good. The two expressions belong to successive turns. Translating a Czech greeting with the reply would change the speaker’s contribution from asking about another person to reporting their own condition. Likewise, a Czech answer about being well should not become another question merely because both phrases occur together in a conversational reference.

Its next prompt, Ilvittauq?, means and you? in that exchange. This is useful when a Czech source returns the question after answering it: the communicative sequence matters more than an isolated gloss for you. The sheet is explicitly organized by language and supplies different forms on neighboring Inuktitut and Inuvialuktun pages. Use its Inuinnaqtun column as the reference here. Related-language examples are not interchangeable replacements simply because their English translations or conversational purposes resemble one another.
