Czech to Hmong Daw: separate counted roles from classifier meaning

Czech case after a number is not a Hmong classifier

Czech counting phrases change their grammatical shape as their role changes. The Czech Academy handbook contrasts pět mužů, five men, with pěti mužům, to five men. Both refer to five people. The different endings encode a syntactic relationship; they do not indicate a different kind of counted object.

This matters when moving into Hmong Daw classifier phrases. The translator must preserve the quantity and sentence role while choosing the appropriate target classifier. A Czech genitive after a numeral is not a signal to insert a Hmong possession construction. In direct cases, Czech numerals from five through ninety-nine can themselves determine the pattern of the counted noun.

An inventory containing five books and a sentence about giving something to five people therefore require two distinct analyses. First identify what is being counted; then identify how that group participates in the sentence. Czech endings help with the latter task, but cannot supply the Hmong lexical classifier by themselves.

Book and sheet require different lexical decisions

Annie Jaisser’s teaching material contrasts phau ntawv, book, with daim ntawv, sheet of paper. The shared noun does not make the two phrases interchangeable. The classifier helps establish the intended reading, so translating a Czech document reference requires more than finding a general equivalent for the noun.

Czech kniha and list papíru already distinguish a bound book from an individual sheet in their vocabulary. Preserve that distinction in Hmong rather than treating classifier selection as an optional stylistic addition. A request to bring a book and a request to bring a sheet of paper should still identify different objects after translation.

The same problem arises when a Czech phrase is shortened to a number and a noun understood from the preceding exchange. Recover the actual referent before choosing the target wording: the numeral alone cannot tell you whether the writer means volumes, pages or separate sheets. These are competing interpretations of the item, not alternative ways to express its Czech case.

Do not convert Czech gender into classifier categories

The University of Wisconsin resource gives tus txiv for husband and lub txiv for fruit. Here the classifier can distinguish meanings associated with the same written noun. Its contribution is lexical and referential; calling classifiers equivalents of Czech masculine, feminine and neuter gender would conceal that function.

A Czech masculine noun referring to an inanimate object does not justify a Hmong person classifier. Conversely, a person’s grammatical presentation in Czech is not a complete instruction for choosing every target noun phrase. Identify the person or object denoted, then read the classifier together with its noun.

For a Czech-to-Hmong vocabulary list, retain whole classifier–noun examples where they establish the intended reading. A bare translated noun can merge distinctions that the Czech list originally expressed through separate words. The practical aim is to preserve the contrast between the actual objects or people named, rather than reproducing a Czech gender label in an unrelated grammatical system.
