Czech to German: calling somebody can change the person’s case

The person contacted does not keep one case across languages

The Czech Academy dictionary lists telefonovat with a person in the dative and also documents a construction with s kým for speaking with someone. German Duden illustrates anrufen with jemanden, an accusative object, for making telephone contact.

A Czech message about calling a colleague therefore cannot be translated by preserving the source case label mechanically. If the chosen German verb is anrufen, the target construction establishes its own object case. The colleague remains the person contacted even though the grammatical packaging changes. Treating every source dative as a German dative would confuse preservation of meaning with preservation of inflection.

A similar-looking verb offers another construction

Duden separately illustrates telefonieren with mit jemandem. Thus the German choice between anrufen and telefonieren affects how the other participant is expressed. The similarity between Czech telefonovat and German telefonieren does not settle the translation by spelling alone.

Imagine an original Czech message promising to call a customer, followed by another describing a long telephone conversation with that customer. Both involve the same device and participant, but the emphasis differs between making contact and talking with someone. Select the target verb and its construction together. Combining the object pattern from one German verb with the lexical form of the other can produce an unnatural sentence even when every major noun has been translated correctly.

Regional usage is not a universal standard case rule

Duden records dative anrufen as regional colloquial usage in southwestern Germany and Switzerland, while its main examples use accusative objects. The regional note explains encountered variation; it does not establish that all German telephone-contact constructions accept the Czech dative pattern.

For a general German business message, copying a dative solely because the Czech recipient appears in that case would lack a sound target basis. Conversely, a regional speaker’s authentic dative should not be interpreted as naming a different customer. Distinguish the intended variety from a claim about universal grammatical identity. The relevant question is which target construction the communication calls for, rather than which case allows the source ending to remain most recognizable.

A completed call and a future call are different commitments

The Czech dictionary distinguishes perfective zatelefonovat from imperfective telefonovat. Czech UD additionally explains that perfective present-shaped forms can receive a future interpretation. A source verb’s surface resemblance to a present form does not necessarily report an ongoing conversation.

An original promise to call after lunch should not become a claim that the call has already taken place. Likewise, an account of having called several times should not be reduced to a single future attempt. Preserve whether the Czech writer promises contact, reports an attempt already made, or describes conversation as an activity. Correct German object case is only one part of that message: it cannot compensate for a contact promise converted into a completed-call report.
