Czech to Galician: keep track of who performs an infinitive

The person named first may not perform the second action

In a Czech message about arranging a journey, the person giving advice and the person travelling can be different people. An infinitive does not itself display a person or number ending. The relationship between the verbs and their participants supplies that information. Galician can make a subject distinction visible through an inflected infinitive, but choosing it requires reading the whole construction.

CzechEncy contrasts Petr doporučil Evě jet do divadla taxíkem with Petr plánoval jet do divadla taxíkem. In the recommendation, Eva is understood to make the journey. In the plan, Petr is the traveller. The repeated infinitive jet does not identify either person on its own.

That difference matters when translating instructions passed through a coordinator. An output saying that the coordinator will travel can be perfectly plausible while assigning the task to the wrong person. Mark the adviser, recipient and traveller separately before judging whether the Galician sentence has preserved the arrangement.

An ending can clarify a subject without creating an ordinary tense

Galician has an inflected infinitive, often called infinitivo conxugado or infinitivo persoal. It can indicate person and number. This differs from the Czech infinitive and should not be treated as a misspelling or automatically replaced by an ordinary finite verb merely because the target form has a personal ending.

The Telleiras teaching sheet illustrates ao chegaren os primeiros fríos: the arriving subject is the first cold spells, rather than the person mentioned in the following main clause. This is particularly useful when reading a translated circumstance before a main instruction. The participant in the opening phrase need not be the participant carrying out that instruction.

An ending is nevertheless not a universal replacement for Czech infinitival syntax. The same teaching material distinguishes constructions requiring an uninflected form, including verbal periphrases, from situations admitting or requiring an inflected infinitive. Translate the relationship expressed by the Czech source; do not impose personal endings on every Galician infinitive associated with a named person.

Separate the event map from the choice of construction

For a travel email, first list who recommends the trip, who receives that recommendation, and who is expected to go. For a timetable explanation, distinguish people following the timetable from events such as the arrival of colder weather. These small event maps expose an actor switch that a comparison of individual verbs could miss.

Next read the Galician clause containing the second action together with its governing expression. Its form may depend on whether it is part of a verbal construction or introduces a separate circumstance. A different subject is relevant, but the surrounding syntax still matters. A finite subordinate clause may also be the appropriate translation; preserving an infinitive at all costs is not the objective.

Finally check what a recipient could act upon. If the source asks one participant to organise something for another participant to do, both responsibilities should remain distinguishable. Keeping that division clear makes the translation useful for arranging the actual journey, rather than merely producing two grammatically recognisable verbs.
