Czech to Chhattisgarhi: har does not automatically mean several people

A noun without an article can still identify a known person

WALS classifies Czech as having neither a definite nor an indefinite article. A Czech noun can nevertheless refer to a particular person already established in the conversation. The absence of a separate article does not make every source noun nonspecific.

Renkovskaya’s account of Chhattisgarhi discusses har as a marker of definiteness, including the examples ceriyā har and sūā har, glossed as the maid and the parrot. A Chhattisgarhi translation can therefore make identifiable reference visible through material that has no independent article counterpart in the Czech source. Its presence should not be mistaken for an extra person or animal.

Historical plural connections do not supply every modern interpretation

The article investigates a proposed historical relationship between associative plural markers and other grammatical uses. In its Chhattisgarhi section, the author distinguishes definiteness marking from particular regional forms associated with a person and others. The historical analysis is not a rule that every modern har means and companions.

Consider an original Czech message saying that a known teacher has arrived. A target har attached to the teacher expression need not announce the arrival of a group. Conversely, a source statement about the teacher and accompanying students must retain those additional participants. Counting target suffixes rather than identifying their construction can either invent a party of visitors or remove the people who actually accompany the teacher.

A specific individual differs from an open request for anyone suitable

A Czech exchange may first identify the colleague assigned to a task, then refer to that colleague with an ordinary noun. Another exchange might ask for any colleague available to help. Because Czech does not require articles, these distinctions often depend on the surrounding wording rather than one dedicated article slot.

The Chhattisgarhi translation should preserve whether the person is already identifiable. A target definiteness marker is not merely ornamental material to insert after every noun or delete from every short sentence. In the first exchange, it can participate in maintaining reference to the assigned colleague. In the second, an overly definite reading can make the recipient search for one particular person when the source allows any suitable helper.

Keep the reported construction separate from neighbouring languages

Renkovskaya explicitly contrasts Chhattisgarhi har with related-looking material in other Indo-Aryan languages. Her discussion does not license importing another language’s possessive or plural interpretation simply because a marker has a similar sound.

For a Czech message naming a relative and then describing what that relative did, do not assume that har adds an owner, a family group, or an honorific in every occurrence. Recover the source relationship first, and interpret the target expression within Chhattisgarhi. A familiar family word is not enough to determine the marker’s function. The useful comparison is between the actual Czech referent and the specific Chhattisgarhi construction, rather than between isolated forms taken from a general list of regional languages.
