Catalan to Uzbek Latin: definite objects and apostrophe-like letters

The Catalan object’s status matters more than its article position

CPNL contrasts Llegeixo el llibre with Llegeixo llibres: the first refers to a particular book, while the second does not identify a unique one. Uzbek does not use a preceding article corresponding directly to Catalan el. The Peace Corps grammar instead discusses object marking as one way of distinguishing a definite object. A Catalan-to-Uzbek rendering should therefore preserve whether the source concerns an identified item without requiring a separate target article before the noun.

Catalan carries the same distinction into short answers. Definite el or la, indefinite en and neutral ho have different reference functions in CPNL’s account. Before translating a reply, recover whether it concerns an item already identified, an unspecified quantity or a whole proposition. A visible Catalan pronoun is not a replacement for understanding that reference. The appropriate Uzbek construction depends on the object actually intended, rather than on treating every short source form as the same word meaning “it.”

A source feminine form need not create a female target referent

The Peace Corps account explains that Uzbek uses one third-person pronoun for references corresponding to he, she and it. Catalan grammatical gender can instead be visible in its short object forms. If la refers back to a feminine inanimate noun, the Uzbek sentence should not acquire a female human participant merely because an intermediate gloss labels the Catalan form “her.” Identify the antecedent before interpreting the target pronoun.

The same source distinguishes familiar and respectful address and notes that a respectful form can also address several people. This is another reason to establish real participants before comparing endings. A Catalan letter using courteous vós can address one individual despite plural-looking grammar, as CPNL’s administrative guidance explains. Neither language’s courteous form should be interpreted as a head count without its context.

Uzbek letter marks are not Catalan elisions

In Latin Uzbek, o‘ and g‘ are alphabetic combinations, documented in the Estonian Language Institute’s account of the established Latin alphabet. The mark should not be removed as though it merely joined a Catalan article to a vowel-initial noun. Catalan l’ and a letter combination such as Uzbek o‘ serve different orthographic purposes. Their superficially similar punctuation does not make the surrounding letters interchangeable.

The institute records more than one character convention for the mark and gives the language names o‘zbek tili and o‘zbekcha. A Catalan reader may consequently encounter a visibly different apostrophe-shaped character in the same Uzbek name. Preserve the intended letter combination rather than inserting a space after it or treating it as a quotation boundary. This concerns how the target word is written, not whether the translation has omitted another word.

Latin script does not preserve Catalan phrase order

The Uzbek grammar describes postpositions after nouns and a usual subject–object–predicate order. A Catalan phrase with a preposition before a place can therefore be reorganized in the target. The shared Latin writing direction does not make the languages’ grammatical sequencing identical. Keep the source participant, place and relation connected when reading the Uzbek result, even where their visible positions differ from the Catalan original.
