Catalan to Telugu: a liking statement has two participants and changing agreement

The Catalan liking verb agrees with the thing liked

Catalan agradar makes the thing liked the grammatical subject, while the person experiencing the preference is represented through an indirect-object expression. That is a useful starting point for Telugu, but the target construction has its own case and agreement behaviour. Shared meaning does not imply identical verb endings.

The CPNL table contrasts a mi m’agrada with a mi m’agraden. The experiencer remains first-person singular in both; the verb changes according to the singular or plural thing liked. A Catalan plural liking verb should therefore not be interpreted as evidence that several people hold the preference.

This matters in a description of one person’s preferences involving several items. The source verb can be plural while its experiencer is singular. Establishing which participant controls which source form prevents a Telugu translation from multiplying the people merely to account for a Catalan agreement ending.

Telugu can identify the experiencer without changing the affirmative predicate

Troy Messick’s Telugu study contrasts naaku annam iStam and niiku annam iStam, meaning I like rice and you like rice. The dative experiencer changes, but the affirmative predicate has the same visible form in these examples. Catalan person reference and target case therefore deserve separate attention from surface verb agreement.

The Telugu UD documentation also recognises non-canonical subjects, including dative nominals. Its annotation choices are not a complete teaching grammar, but they reinforce why a dative phrase should not automatically be interpreted as merely a recipient in every construction.

For Catalan to Telugu, identify whether the source person receives something or experiences a preference. Catalan indirect-object morphology can occur in both kinds of meaning. In the preference construction, translating that person as a recipient of the liked item would change the event: liking food does not itself mean being given food.

Negating the preference can introduce agreement on a different participant

Messick’s study gives Rani-ki neenu iStam-lee-nu for Rani does not like me. In this negative construction, the agreement follows the unmarked liked participant, not the dative experiencer. The example is a strong reason not to assume that a first-person ending always identifies the person doing the liking.

This is particularly useful when a Catalan exchange says who likes or dislikes another person. Catalan’s indirect-object pronoun identifies the experiencer, while its agradar agreement follows the liked person or people. The Telugu output must preserve those roles even though the affirmative and negative target constructions package agreement differently.

A translation should consequently be read as a relationship between two independently identified participants. Replacing an affirmative phrase with a negative one can require more than adding a word meaning no. The cited Telugu examples demonstrate a construction-specific change; they do not establish that all Telugu predicates lose agreement affirmatively or acquire object agreement negatively. Keep that scope narrow when applying the comparison to Catalan liking statements.
