Bulgarian to Punjabi: reporting a completed action without misreading agreement

The actor is not always the agreement controller

Bulgarian verbs distinguish imperfective and perfective aspect, but knowing that distinction does not tell you which Punjabi noun a translated verb should agree with. Punjabi has constructions in which a perfective transitive verb can agree with its direct object rather than its subject. The person who performed the action remains the actor even when the verb’s form reflects the object.

The Punjabi resource grammar by Virk, Humayoun, and Ranta discusses this partial ergative behavior. Its account also notes special behavior with first- and second-person pronouns. It is therefore unsafe to treat an ergative subject marker as something to insert after every person mentioned in a past-tense sentence. The construction and the kind of participant matter, not merely the presence of a past date.

For a Bulgarian delivery report, separate who packed an item from what was packed. A change in the Punjabi verb’s agreement does not automatically change the packer’s identity. Before interpreting a target form as referring to a different person, establish which participant controls agreement in that construction. Confusing grammatical agreement with responsibility can reverse the practical meaning of a short update.

A completed event and its result are different messages

A report that someone packed a parcel, a statement that the parcel is ready, and a promise to pack it tomorrow all concern the same parcel. They do not describe the same stage. Preserve the Bulgarian distinction between an event being carried out and an event viewed as a whole, while allowing Punjabi to express the intended event with its own combination of verb forms.

Punjabi also uses light-verb constructions. The Universal Dependencies description distinguishes ordinary and light-verb uses of ਜਾਣਾ, whose dictionary meaning is “to go,” from its use as a passive auxiliary. Seeing that word in a translation does not by itself establish that somebody physically went somewhere. Read its role in the complete verb expression before treating it as an added journey.

This is particularly relevant when a Bulgarian report changes from naming the sender to describing what happened to the parcel. The source’s passive and active constructions can package the same participants differently. Keep the action and its affected item clear; do not restore an omitted sender unless the source or surrounding conversation actually identifies one.

Gender categories do not transfer noun by noun

Bulgarian has masculine, feminine, and neuter nouns. Punjabi descriptions distinguish masculine and feminine. A Bulgarian neuter noun cannot simply bring a third gender category into the Punjabi sentence. The target noun has its own grammatical behavior, which can affect agreement independently of the Bulgarian ending.

If a draft changes from referring to a parcel to referring to its contents, revisit the whole clause rather than replacing the noun alone. The new target noun may have different agreement requirements, and a perfective transitive construction may make that difference visible on the verb. Keep any tracking number attached to the same real shipment throughout the message. That stable reference lets the reader follow the delivery even when the grammatical forms change with the chosen Punjabi noun.
