Bulgarian to Inuktitut: the question, its participants and its syllabic spelling

A Bulgarian question particle is not an Inuktitut question ending

Bulgarian can form a yes-or-no question with ли. Inuktitut uses dedicated question endings that identify the participant being asked about. Changing a Bulgarian statement into a question therefore cannot be accomplished in the target by punctuation alone or by leaving the statement ending untouched.

Pirurvik’s Tusaalanga lesson contrasts qanuippit?, how are you to one person, with qanuippisik? to two and qanuippisi? to three or more. Bulgarian plural address does not make that two-versus-larger-group distinction by itself. When the Bulgarian message addresses a couple, the target needs to retain the fact that there are two addressees rather than defaulting to an unrestricted plural.

Polite Bulgarian Вие can also refer to one person. Before interpreting it as several addressees, establish whether it is a respectful singular or a true plural. Otherwise, the Inuktitut question may address the wrong number of people even though its conversational meaning appears close.

Find the actor and the affected person before reading the ending

Bulgarian object clitics can identify someone receiving or affected by an action, including when a full noun phrase refers to that same person. Inuktitut transitive endings can encode both the actor and the affected participant inside one word. A target translation can consequently use fewer separate words while retaining both roles.

Tusaalanga distinguishes the ending meaning I see from the more complex ending meaning I see him, her or it. This makes a useful check for Bulgarian input containing a short object reference: has the target retained the person being seen, helped or addressed? Simply counting standalone pronouns cannot answer that question because the Inuktitut verb may already contain the relationship.

Syllabic orientation and small marks belong to the word

Bulgarian Cyrillic letters and Inuktitut syllabics represent writing differently. In the standardized chart presented by Tusaalanga, ᒥ represents mi, ᒧ represents mu and ᒪ represents ma. Rotating or substituting one character changes the syllable; it is not a harmless variation in how the same consonant is drawn.

Long vowels are indicated by a dot above the relevant syllabic character, while a consonant without a following vowel uses a smaller final character. When copying a translation of a Bulgarian name or message, preserve those dots and finals. Removing them to make a line look cleaner can change the written word instead of merely changing its presentation.

Translation still comes before script conversion

A Bulgarian sentence cannot become Inuktitut by replacing Cyrillic characters with syllabic approximations. The target needs its own roots, affixes and grammatical endings. Tusaalanga’s structure lesson shows how one Inuktitut word can contain a root, information about time or another relationship, and an ending identifying the actor.

Keep that complete grammatical word together. Bulgarian often expresses related information through separate particles, prepositions or short pronouns, so source word boundaries are a poor guide to target spacing. The result should preserve the source question and its participants while using coherent Inuktitut words, rather than reproduce the visual length of the Bulgarian sentence.
