Bulgarian to Basque: a denial can reorganize the verb complex

Negation is not a word inserted into a fixed affirmative order

A Bulgarian negative sentence cannot be translated into Basque by substituting ez for не while preserving every other word position. The University of the Basque Country grammar contrasts emakumea etorri da with emakumea ez da etorri. These describe the woman’s arrival and its denial. In the negative main clause, the auxiliary precedes the lexical verb rather than following it.

This creates a concrete risk in Bulgarian arrival updates: a target draft may contain the right woman, arrival verb and negative word but still use the wrong construction. The grammatical unit to evaluate is the negative auxiliary together with the lexical verb. The source’s separate negative particle does not guarantee that the target can be corrected by inserting one word into the affirmative version.

A Bulgarian subject does not always become the same Basque case

Bulgarian largely lacks noun case declension. Basque distinguishes argument relationships through cases including absolutive, ergative and dative, and its auxiliaries can cross-reference several participants. A Bulgarian participant identified through clause structure therefore needs a Basque form appropriate to the target predicate, not a noun form selected simply because it is the source subject.

Compare the university grammar’s emakumeak liburua irakurri du, concerning a woman reading a book, with the arrival example above. The woman’s noun phrase differs between these constructions, and so does the auxiliary. The change does not mean a second woman has appeared. It reflects the grammatical relationships involved in reading something as opposed to arriving. A Bulgarian narrative alternating those actions needs the Basque participant to remain semantically continuous despite the morphological changes.

A final suffix can belong to an entire phrase

Bulgarian marks definiteness with a postposed article; Basque also marks definiteness morphologically, but the resemblance does not establish identical phrase structure. Basque case marking normally appears at the end of the noun phrase. If an adjective follows the noun, the final marking may occur on that adjective rather than on the noun itself.

For a Bulgarian description containing an identified object and a descriptive adjective, determine the boundaries of the Basque noun phrase before judging an apparently bare noun. The relevant marking may be carried later in that phrase. Conversely, copying the Bulgarian location of its definite ending can separate information that the Basque expression needs to package together. The question is which whole object phrase participates in the action.

Changing word order can change what the denial contrasts

The university grammar also explains that Basque negative word order interacts with information focus. A denial about seeing one person rather than another is not necessarily identical in emphasis to a broad denial that any seeing occurred. Bulgarian contrastive wording must therefore be interpreted before its Basque constituents are arranged.

This is especially useful when a Bulgarian correction names the wrong person or object and then supplies the right one. Preserve that correction’s scope, rather than treating all Basque permutations as stylistic alternatives. The arrival, reading and correction constructions demonstrate three separate decisions: where the negative auxiliary goes, how participants are marked, and which information the denial is intended to reject.
