Bulgarian to Afrikaans: why two negative words can express one refusal

Repeated nie is not necessarily a second refusal

Taalportaal illustrates Ek het nie tyd nie, meaning I do not have time. The two occurrences of nie belong to a single negative clause. A Bulgarian reader should not interpret the repetition as cancelling the refusal, or remove the final word because the first already seems to express not.

The same reference explains that a negative word such as nobody or never can occur with a final nie. The first negative element need not be another nie. Consequently, counting visible negative words is not a dependable way to decide whether the translated statement is affirmative or negative.

For a Bulgarian response declining an invitation, retain whether the speaker lacks time, lacks permission, or simply does not wish to attend. These meanings can all produce negative sentences, but they are different explanations. The Afrikaans negative frame does not supply a reason that the Bulgarian source omitted.

Nor should a refusal be strengthened by adding more negative expressions indiscriminately. The ordinary second nie is grammatical marking, not automatically added emphasis. If the Bulgarian writer intends an emphatic refusal, express that intention in the full source rather than assuming duplicated target spelling makes the message stronger.

Not yet and no longer point in opposite directions

Taalportaal’s account of process expressions distinguishes nog nie … nie from nie meer … nie. One concerns a state not yet reached; the other concerns a state that no longer holds. This difference matters when a Bulgarian message reports readiness, availability, or the condition of equipment.

The reference illustrates Die battery is nog nie vol nie: the battery is not yet full. The statement leaves open a later stage at which it becomes full. A report that something is no longer full instead describes a change away from a previous state.

For an equipment handover, distinguish charging that is unfinished from a battery that has already lost its charge. Both could explain why an item is unavailable, but they suggest different next actions. Preserve the Bulgarian expression indicating whether the condition is approaching or has ceased.

Bulgarian aspect distinguishes ways of presenting events, but an imperfective or perfective verb alone should not be treated as a fixed translation of these Afrikaans state expressions. Keep words equivalent to already, still, yet, or no longer where they establish the direction of change.

A present het need not report a completed action

In the time example above, het expresses possession in a present statement. Afrikaans also uses het as a temporal auxiliary with a past participle. Seeing the same written word in two messages therefore does not establish that both refer to the past.

Bulgarian has its own tense and aspect distinctions, while Afrikaans can distribute information across an auxiliary and another verb form. Read the construction containing het before deciding whether the target has changed the time of the statement. The word by itself is insufficient evidence.

This distinction is practical in a refusal followed by an explanation: having no time now and having completed something earlier are separate assertions. Preserve the Bulgarian time references and the relationship between the clauses. The Afrikaans wording can then express both without forcing every occurrence of het into the same interpretation.
