Bodo to Serbian Cyrillic: grammatical gender and personal identity must stay separate

The source pronoun can leave gender unspecified

Basumatary describes Bodo bi as a third-person pronoun without gender agreement. A message using it may need earlier context to identify the person referred to, but the word itself does not choose a male or female pronoun. Serbian target grammar can require distinctions that cannot be invented from bi alone.

The Serbian Universal Dependencies reference distinguishes masculine, feminine and neuter nominal gender. Agreement with a noun can also occur in adjectives and in particular verbal forms. A target description should therefore be constructed around the actual referent and grammatical noun rather than a universal translation chosen for every occurrence of Bodo bi.

This is especially relevant when a source mentions a person and then that person’s item. The pronoun’s referent and the grammatical gender of the item are different questions. A change in the form of a target description of the possession does not automatically mean the owner changed sex or identity.

Not every Serbian verb form marks gender

The same reference specifically distinguishes participles and converbs, which can inflect for gender, from finite verbs, which do not. A Bodo writer should not expect every Serbian predicate to display a separate male-versus-female ending. The particular verb form matters.

For a report about a third person, a past construction can contain gender-related information in its participial component. That does not justify attaching a gender ending indiscriminately to a present finite verb. Conversely, a target sentence lacking a visibly gendered finite form has not necessarily omitted the source person.

Bodo honorific bithang provides another independent distinction: respectful reference. Serbian grammatical gender does not express that respect by itself. A target can identify the right person grammatically yet fail to preserve the intended interpersonal tone. Keep identity, agreement and honorific treatment separate when interpreting a source message about an elder or colleague.

Cyrillic output needs the Serbian construction as well as the script

The requested target uses Cyrillic. The Serbian reference distinguishes the future form illustrated in Latin as pružiće from a Croatian spelling that separates the auxiliary. Its Serbian Cyrillic representation is пружиће. Choosing the Cyrillic alphabet is therefore not the entire translation decision; the word’s grammatical formation must also follow the intended target standard.

Basumatary’s Bodo example with gabɯn explicitly locates an event tomorrow. That source time information can guide interpretation, but it does not determine the exact spelling or auxiliary arrangement of every Serbian future construction. A translator should not copy a neighbouring standard’s form and assume script conversion resolves all differences.

The target also has case distinctions affecting personal and nominal forms. Bodo -ni in an owner phrase, -nɯ for a recipient and -zɯŋ for accompaniment are clues to source relationships, not instructions to append identical Serbian endings everywhere. A compact request can involve the writer, a respected third person and that person’s possession. Preserve those roles while constructing the required target cases and agreement, then present the completed Serbian sentence in Cyrillic. Correct letters cannot repair an owner or actor assigned to the wrong person.
