Spanish to Serbian Cyrillic: a past statement may need the speaker’s gender

He estado does not identify a male or female speaker

The RAE conjugation table gives he estado for first-person singular Spanish without separate masculine and feminine alternatives. A man and a woman can use that same verbal expression. Serbian past constructions can require a distinction absent from those Spanish words, so a short first-person source may not provide everything needed to select the target form.

The Serbian course paradigm gives Ја сам био as masculine and Ја сам била as feminine. Both identify the speaker through the auxiliary сам, while био or била differs. The ending is not a reference to the person receiving the message. A translation written for someone else must follow the person whose first-person statement it represents.

A gendered adjective and a past participle do different jobs

Spanish can reveal the speaker’s gender elsewhere, such as in an adjective describing that speaker. The RAE distinguishes this nominal or predicative agreement from the person-and-number agreement of a finite verb. That distinction helps explain why a Spanish source can leave gender unmarked in he estado yet reveal it in another part of the same sentence.

The presence of a feminine noun elsewhere is not enough. A Spanish statement mentioning a feminine place noun does not thereby make the narrator female. Identify which expression actually describes or refers to the speaker before using it as evidence for the Serbian past form. Otherwise the grammatical gender of the location could accidentally be assigned to the person visiting it.

Likewise, a copied quotation retains the original speaker’s perspective. If a Spanish message contains someone else’s first-person account, the person currently sending the text need not be the person represented by I. The Serbian choice should not silently switch merely because a different user has pasted the quotation into the translator.

The auxiliary still distinguishes who is being discussed

The course separately gives ти си био or била for a singular addressee. Comparing that row with the first-person row shows two independent distinctions: сам versus си identifies person, while the participial ending identifies gender. Keeping only the participle because it seems to carry the past meaning would lose part of the documented construction.

For Spanish readers, this is particularly useful when a sentence omits yo or tú. Spanish finite forms can still establish the person, and the Serbian auxiliary must preserve that relationship. Discovering that the speaker is female does not turn a first-person statement into a statement addressed to a woman. Person and gender must be resolved together.

These examples are presented in Cyrillic as in the cited paradigm. Changing the script would not resolve missing information about the Spanish narrator, and the distinction should not be guessed from a name alone. For this construction, establish whose past state is described and which gendered form is appropriate for that person; then preserve both the auxiliary and participle in the target sentence.
