Bodo to Estonian: an object marker cannot be transferred without the event meaning

The target object depends on more than participant identity

Basumatary’s Bodo study illustrates accusative marking on a pronoun functioning as an object. An Estonian translation needs that participant role recovered, but the target object form also depends on the event construction. The Estonian Language Institute explains that a total object requires several conditions together, including affirmation, a bounded result, a whole quantity and a verb permitting that construction.

A Bodo report identifying what somebody affected therefore cannot be translated by selecting one invariant Estonian object case. Determine whether the event is presented as completed or open and whether the object is a whole quantity. Correctly identifying the object is necessary, but it does not by itself settle the target form.

An eating event may leave the amount open

EKI contrasts poiss sõi putru with poiss sõi pudru ära, illustrating the difference between an eating description and a bounded completed result involving the porridge. A Bodo source message about eating should retain whether it presents activity or a completed quantity, rather than assume that past time guarantees a total object.

This matters when a Bodo account reports what happened during a meal without claiming that all the food was consumed. An Estonian target indicating a completed whole can strengthen the source claim. Conversely, where the source clearly says a specified portion was finished, an open activity description can lose the result central to the report.

Negating the event affects the target construction

The EKI guidance contrasts the affirmative completed example with a negative counterpart using a partitive object. A Bodo negative claim should therefore be translated as a whole clause, not formed by inserting a target negative word into an unchanged affirmative sentence. The object construction must remain appropriate after negation.

The Bodo actor and the item can stay identical while the proposition changes from completion to non-completion. Retaining their identities does not mean retaining every target inflection. Preserve what is denied: whether the event occurred, whether a result was reached or whether a particular quantity was involved. Do not let an unchanged target noun form add a completion claim that the source negates.

The verb can restrict which object pattern is available

EKI lists verbs requiring a partitive object and warns that a total-object construction also depends on the lexical verb. The Estonian translation must consequently choose the predicate and object together. A Bodo accusative expression is not proof that every plausible Estonian synonym permits the same target case.

In a translated account about beginning a task, carrying it out and completing it, each predicate can contribute different information about the event. Recover the source meaning before assembling the target phrase. This preserves the participant identified by Bodo case marking while also expressing the target distinctions concerning quantity, affirmation and result, instead of treating the source object suffix as a complete Estonian inflection instruction.
