Bodo to Belarusian: a family relation needs both an owner and a case form

A kinship word can already identify whose relative is meant

Basumatary’s Bodo pronoun study illustrates pronominal material inside kinship terms. Its contrast ada and bida identifies my elder brother and his or her elder brother. A Belarusian translation should therefore recover the family anchor before treating the source expression as merely an unmodified word for brother.

If a Bodo account switches from the speaker’s brother to another person’s brother, the target must preserve that reference change. Repeating one Belarusian kinship noun without the necessary ownership information could make the two relatives appear to be the same person. Conversely, adding first-person possession to every kinship expression would incorrectly bring somebody else’s family into the speaker’s own.

The relative’s sentence role controls target declension

Marchant’s Belarusian noun chapter shows that nouns change form across case and number. Identifying the relative’s owner consequently does not settle the form of the relative noun in the whole sentence. A Bodo family member can be the actor, a recipient or the person discussed through another relation.

The Bodo study illustrates distinct dative and accusative pronoun marking. Those source markers help recover the participant role, but they do not replace the need to construct the appropriate Belarusian form. A source reference meaning to me and one meaning me as an affected participant should not be translated as identical target relations simply because the same speaker is involved.

A familiar noun paradigm is not a universal ending list

Marchant illustrates стол, table, with dative сталу and instrumental сталом. These forms demonstrate case differences within one paradigm; their endings should not be mechanically appended to every Belarusian noun translated from Bodo. The target noun’s own declension determines how the recovered role is expressed.

This matters when a Bodo family narrative also mentions possessions or furniture. A person receiving an item and an object involved in another relation may require different noun paradigms. Establish the lexical target noun before selecting its case form, rather than transfer a successful ending from the previous phrase to a new noun.

Genderless source reference may need further identification

Basumatary describes Bodo personal pronouns as lacking gender agreement. A third-person family anchor can therefore require interpretation from the wider account when the Belarusian wording distinguishes the relevant gender. Do not guess the owner from the gender of the relative named: somebody’s elder brother can belong to the family of a woman or a man.

Keep the owner, the relative and the role in the event as three independent decisions. A Bodo passage may describe a woman giving something to her elder brother; the brother’s gender does not make the woman a male owner, and the recipient relation does not make the brother the giver. The Belarusian translation must preserve all those relations while applying the target noun and pronoun forms.
