Belarusian quantities in Bodo noun phrases

A grammatical gender is not a target classifier

Belarusian nouns belong to masculine, feminine or neuter agreement patterns and change case form in numerical and other phrases. Bodo classifiers organise counted expressions differently. A target classifier is not simply a replacement for a Belarusian noun’s gender.

Asha Rani Brahma’s original study identifies “sa” for human referents and “ma” for animals in its Bodo examples. These short romanised research forms demonstrate a distinction based on the counted referent, not on whether a source noun ends like a Belarusian masculine or feminine word.

For a source report about people and livestock, establish what each numeral counts. Two nouns with the same source grammatical gender can need different Bodo classifiers. Conversely, a target classifier can group referents whose Belarusian nouns belong to different genders.

Shape and use can matter to the counted expression

The study documents “phang” with trees and “gong” with a range of objects, including houses and furniture. These categories show why recognising only the numeral is not enough to assess a target quantity phrase.

A Belarusian noun can describe a tree, its fruit or an item made from wood. The material alone does not determine which Bodo counted construction fits. Translate what is being counted in the source situation rather than extending one example to everything connected with the same plant.

This is useful in purchase and delivery lists. An order for trees and an order for wooden household items can contain related vocabulary while counting different kinds of objects. A target that preserves the digits but selects the wrong category can misdescribe the order.

Counted units and case roles are independent

Belarusian case marking can indicate whether a quantity phrase is an actor, object, recipient or another participant. Bodo classifier selection concerns the noun expression, and does not by itself preserve all those source relationships.

For an instruction about giving several objects to somebody, identify the items and their count separately from the recipient. A well-formed target noun phrase can still be assigned to the wrong role in the clause.

The source’s numerical construction may also affect the noun form. Do not treat a source ending as a second object or a different lexical item merely because it differs from the dictionary headword. Recover the noun’s identity and quantity before rebuilding the Bodo phrase.

The classifier examples here are scoped to the original research. They are illustrative components, not complete translated requests that can be copied without the surrounding verb and participant expressions.

Changing the alphabet does not perform the translation

Belarusian Cyrillic and the Devanagari Bodo writing presented in the CIIL-NCERT primer represent different language systems. Replacing source letters with approximately corresponding target letters cannot select a classifier or resolve a numerical relationship.

Romanised forms in a linguistic article are useful for comparing constructions, but the finished result should use the intended Bodo writing consistently. Do not mix the research transcription into a Devanagari sentence as if it were an ordinary target word.

For the final review, check the referent, counted unit and clause role before inspecting the written characters. Accurate script rendering cannot repair a quantity phrase that counts the wrong thing or assigns it to the wrong participant.
