Bodo to Bangla: a genitive can introduce accompaniment as well as ownership

The same person can own an item or accompany somebody

Basumatary’s Bodo study distinguishes genitive pronoun marking from a sociative construction expressing with somebody. A Bangla translation needs the underlying relation before selecting a target phrase. A person associated with an event is not necessarily the owner of something in it.

The Bengali teaching grammar illustrates tomar songe and apnar songe for with you at familiar and respectful address levels. These phrases use genitive forms before songe, but their function is accompaniment rather than ordinary possession. A Bodo sociative expression should therefore be translated according to that relation, without treating the target genitive shape as evidence that the companion owns the journey or its participants.

The owner may already be built into a kinship term

Basumatary illustrates Bodo ada and bida as my elder brother and his or her elder brother. A Bangla translation should recover that ownership anchor even when the source does not display a separate independent pronoun beside the kinship noun. Omitting it can change which family the relative belongs to.

In a Bodo account about travelling with another person’s elder brother, the family anchor and the accompaniment relation are distinct. The brother belongs to somebody’s family, while the traveller accompanies him. Bangla wording should preserve both rather than let a single genitive-looking form blur whose brother he is and who travels with him.

Respect in address requires more than counting listeners

The Bodo study distinguishes ordinary and honorific second-person pronouns. The Bengali teaching grammar contrasts tumi and apni, with corresponding finite verb forms such as jano and janen. A respectful Bodo instruction to one person should therefore retain singular reference while constructing an appropriate Bangla address pattern.

This is relevant if the person addressed is also asked to accompany a relative. A polite pronoun does not turn that listener into a group, and the listener need not be the owner identified in the family expression. Track the source addressee separately from both the relative and the person whose family anchors the relative.

A possession count should not become a companion count

The Bengali grammar distinguishes plural material used with people from plural material used with other nouns. A Bodo source report mentioning several belongings and one companion should consequently preserve those separate counts. The item group should not make the companion plural, and the companion’s presence should not imply shared ownership.

For a translated travel arrangement, identify which people are going, whose relative is involved and who owns the items mentioned. Bodo can express these relationships through different pronoun and suffix constructions; Bangla reconstructs them through its own noun phrases, postpositions and agreement. The translation succeeds when those concrete relations survive, even where the target uses a genitive form for a function that was expressed differently in the source.
