Bangla to Bodo: classifier position changes when you count an item

A shared use of classifiers can conceal a different order

Bangla and Bodo both use numeral classifiers, but that similarity does not make their counted noun phrases interchangeable. Andrew Simpson and Priyanka Biswas describe Bangla’s regular numeral–classifier–noun sequence. Guddu Prasad Basumatary describes Bodo classifiers preceding the numeral. A translator therefore needs to reorganize the counting expression rather than retain the source’s internal order.

For a Bangla equipment request, separate the quantity, the unit being counted, and the object name before judging the Bodo line. Preserving the number while carrying over a Bangla classifier position can still produce an inappropriate target expression. Shared grammatical terminology is a starting point for comparison, not evidence of identical construction.

One physical object may contain several counted parts

Basumatary illustrates a classifier for legs with both a bodily leg and the legs of a table. This is particularly useful for repair messages: the counted object may be a component rather than the whole item named elsewhere in the sentence. A request for four table legs does not ask for four tables.

Keep the part–whole relationship explicit in a Bangla maintenance order. Identify which numeral belongs to the replacement part and which description identifies the larger object. If the original line lists a table and then a bare quantity, resolve whether the quantity concerns tables, legs, or another component before accepting the Bodo output. That uncertainty is about the intended order, not something a classifier can solve independently.

Counting and identifying are different functions in Bangla

Simpson and Biswas contrast a numeral–classifier expression introducing a key with a noun–classifier expression identifying the key. Their analysis also discusses definite readings of bare nouns. Consequently, a Bangla classifier attached to an identified item must not automatically be interpreted as an unexpressed instruction to count it.

In a repair conversation, an instruction concerning the previously mentioned part and a request for one new part can serve different purposes. Retain the preceding sentence if it establishes the item’s identity. Removing that context can make a translation look like a new purchase request when the sender intended a reference back to an existing component.

The counting unit can itself be a container or measure

Basumatary’s discussion includes nominal units such as sacks and bowlfuls alongside classifiers for objects. The relevant distinction is between a quantity of individual contents and a quantity measured through containers. Do not collapse those two readings just because the Bangla numeral is the same.

For a supply list, record whether the customer wants three separate items, three sacks of a material, or the contents of three sacks. Also preserve whether the container is part of what must be supplied. The final Bodo expression should represent that actual unit, rather than replace every counting word with a single general-purpose form.

A useful review keeps quantity, unit, component, and reference together on each line. The cited studies describe classifier constructions and their interpretation; they do not provide a universal cross-language classifier dictionary. An unfamiliar item needs its own target usage checked, especially when its shape or counting convention differs from the examples.
