Bhojpuri to Welsh: verb position, mutation and the identity of a possessor

The sentence no longer waits for a final verb

Bhojpuri’s regular subject-object-verb pattern, documented in Lohar’s Bara-Parsa grammar, places important verbal information near the end of a clause. Welsh often builds clauses around an initial finite verb, followed by the subject and further material. Preserving the sequence of a Bhojpuri statement can therefore produce an unnatural Welsh sentence even when the individual vocabulary is understandable.

The difference is particularly clear in verbal constructions using Welsh bod, to be. Learn Welsh’s foundation guide describes bod followed by yn or wedi and a verb-noun in several tense and aspect patterns. Bhojpuri also uses multi-part predicates, but its source auxiliaries do not identify the correct Welsh pattern by their physical position. The event’s timing and completion must be established before rebuilding the clause.

A possessive can change the next word’s first consonant

Bhojpuri’s case relationships and agreement are largely expressed through postpositional or suffixal material in the variety Lohar studies. Welsh adds another kind of grammatical signal: initial consonant mutation. A changed first letter in the translation may therefore identify the surrounding construction rather than a different dictionary word. Replacing it with the unmutated headword can remove information that the Welsh phrase requires.

The Academy dictionary illustrates pen, head, as fy mhen, my head, ei ben, his head, and ei phen, her head. Here the written possessive ei is identical for his and her, but the following consonant changes differently. When a Bhojpuri possessive refers back to a person, the Welsh phrase must preserve that possessor relationship; agreement with the possessed noun alone will not select the correct mutation.

Pronoun relationships can be built into a Welsh preposition

Lohar notes that Bhojpuri case markers attach to pronouns, although noun phrases use postpositional marking. Welsh likewise has special forms when a preposition combines with a pronoun, but the matching relationship is expressed through a different paradigm. Similar grammatical jobs do not imply that the Bhojpuri ending can be mechanically detached and represented by an unchanged Welsh preposition.

Learn Welsh gives Ysgrifennodd e ato fe, he wrote to him, within the paradigm of at. The recipient belongs inside ato as well as being clarified by fe. In this direction, identifying the recipient in the Bhojpuri sentence is the essential first step: the Welsh verb, its subject and its recipient must be reconstructed in their own order, rather than preserving the source’s final verb and trailing relationship marker.

Bhojpuri relative structures need a Welsh clause choice

Bhojpuri permits several relative-clause patterns, including correlatives and internally headed structures in Lohar’s account. These can identify a person or thing through a larger construction instead of a single adjacent relative word. Welsh cannot reliably reproduce that information by inserting one equivalent of who wherever the Bhojpuri marker appears.

The foundation Welsh guide distinguishes present relative sy from past oedd and future fydd in the constructions it teaches. A Bhojpuri description of someone who lived somewhere and one of someone who will live there thus require different Welsh choices. Resolve the relative clause’s time reference separately from the main statement, especially when the Bhojpuri predicate carries its tense information toward the end.
